Sales & Trading in Brazil

Does anyone work in banking or more specifically S&T in Brazil? Are you from the United States? or do you know anyone who moved from the U.S. to Brazil to get into the finance world down there? I am thinking about strongly pursuing getting a gig down there in Trading, at the Junior level. Was it difficult to get work visas and make the transition?

I don't know junior people who have started in Brazil and are U.S. natives. Senior people get transferred to different offices, but I think it would be very difficult to start your career there if you're in the U.S. now. At a junior position, you would need to be hired directly by that office, which means you need to get to Brazil to interview, and you'll need to be better than any Brazilian natives. I'm assuming you speak Portuguese fluently.

Others may have more direct insight into your question.

formerMD...is that a rule in Brazil? Having to be better than all natives? That would be a pretty crazy rule, thats just me though. I appreciate your response, thank you. I know someone high up in a bank down there, thats the angle I would play. The portuguese is coming along, but I have heard business is done in English, I could be totally wrong.

What are you trying to say? Do you really think that they will create a separate category for you because you are from the US?? Of course you will compete with all the natives. And of course fluency in Portuguese is a must! Especially if youre just starting out!

Before you apply you should maybe.. just maybe... venture outside of that little bubble you call America.

I did know a girl who was in an office in Brazil for S&T, and then afterwards went to NY for fulltime focused on LatAM related structured products. I forgot whether she was a native and moved to the states or if she was born/raised in US and have deep Brazilian roots (family there, etc.) but she speaks the language fluently and has national ties one way or another.

Based on that, I would assume FormerMD is correct in that it would be tough to build a career there unless you dealt with the group directly...

Kanon...thanks for the input. What do you mean by "dealth with the group directly"...Also, is Portuguese fluency 100% required? I for some reason was under the impression that it wasn't.

Dealt with them directly as in went through recruiting and got the offer from that team (or at least, that regional office) directly.

I never inquired as to whether or not 100% fluency is required for the role as I had no interest in going to SA... but I know she's fluent. I would assume for that market you would have to be. Even now in European countries besides UK it's more or less expected/required that you are fluent in the native language.
