Which internship should I aim for my sophomore year ?

Hey guys just to give a quick background about myself : I'm a rising sophomore international student in the US in a community college in Northern Virginia, This summer I completed 2 internships at 2 different firms, one as a Venture Capital Analyst focusing on Pre-seed to Seed AI B2B SaaS startups, one as a corporate banking intern at Bank of Africa. I also have experience in Sales. Would love to hear suggestions on internships that I should aim for my sophomore year as my long-term goal is getting into IB, should I aim for a boutique IB ? Should I aim for a lower middle market PE ?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a tailored strategy for your sophomore year internships:

  1. Boutique Investment Banks: Targeting boutique IBs is a strong move. These firms often provide hands-on experience, which is invaluable for building technical skills and understanding deal processes. Networking with regional or industry-specific boutiques is highly recommended, as they are more accessible for sophomores and can serve as a stepping stone for junior-year internships at larger firms.

  2. Lower Middle Market Private Equity (PE): If you can secure an internship at a lower middle market PE firm, it would also be a great option. PE internships can help you develop analytical skills, financial modeling expertise, and an understanding of investment strategies, all of which are transferable to IB.

  3. Wealth Management or Corporate Finance: While not as directly aligned with IB as boutique IB or PE, these roles can still provide relevant finance experience. They are often easier to secure and can help you build a strong foundation in financial analysis and client interaction.

  4. Networking and Junior Year Prep: Spend 60% of your time networking with boutique firms for sophomore positions and 40% focusing on top-tier firms for junior-year internships. Use your sophomore internship as a pretext to reach out to contacts at larger firms, keeping them updated on your progress.

  5. Leverage Your Background: Highlight your unique international experience and diverse internship background (VC, corporate banking, and sales) when applying. This sets you apart and demonstrates versatility.

  6. Consider Local/Regional Firms: Given your location in Northern Virginia, explore opportunities at local or regional firms. These firms may have less competitive application processes and can still provide meaningful experience.

By focusing on boutique IBs or lower middle market PE firms, you’ll align your sophomore internship with your long-term goal of breaking into investment banking.

I feel it would be helpful to know what your plan is with your education. are you looking to transfer to a four year? do you have the ability to relocate for the internship even if the pay is subpar? the pre-seed startup stuff is a good signal but how much meat is on that bone (impact/AUM/exposure)? I'd love to know more, i think getting in with a US based PE-rollup portco doing something BD related could be attainable with your resume. I'm not sure why a boutique IB firm would really desire taking on someone with a visa requirement for FT when MM firms like Lincoln are offering less FT slots as is.

Yes, I'm planning to transfer to a four year and I have the ability to relocate for the internship (as long as it's paid or there's a stipend for housing+groceries etc) I've helped the VC invest in a startup though and the team loved the work that I've done for them. I'm honestly not looking for a full time position at an IB, I'm only looking to get the IB exposure and experience.
