Scheduling Interviews with Competing Firms
Guys help me out! This is very Taboo and I damn sure am not going to ask my colleagues how to do this.
So im recently out of undergrad (almost a year). working a strategy/corporate function at a GS/MS/JPM type. I have had an IBD internship at a reputable firm in Asia and the skillsets are still fresh and its what I want to do..
The problem is that my Visa ran out overseas and i got sent back to NYC with a limited network. My current job has me working alot of valuation (but on our internal positions.. i.e. not generating revenue!! its a career trap in my opinion!)
I can get ibd interviews here now. the problem is its busy season at my bank. i dont wanna fuck over my team but i gotta schedule other opportunities.
Whose done this?? i need good excuses... not im sick and im not saying someone died.
Should i stick in here? Im getting promoted in less than a year.. Associate after 1 year of analyst is tempting.
Constructive help guys... thanks.
I applaud you for not wanting to screw your team -- big firms could use more people with that perspective. Having said that, when push comes to shove, firms like GS/JPM/MS don't give two shits about you! You need to think about what is best for you in situations like this, and if that means a few people on your current team need to burn the midnight oil for a night or two, so be it. Your future comes first.
Believe me, big firms will just as quickly screw you.
I hate being this bleak, but the real world has taught me a (tough) lesson or two. Good luck.
My advice is to except the fact that someone will figure out that you are interviewing, even though you say you are sick. Just about everyone has done it at one point or another. You have to take risks to get ahead.
It's a pain, however you will get used to making up excuses, phone calls the night before, and scheduling last minute "long weekends." The situation sucks, especially when companies give a day or two notice regarding interviewing scheduling (happened a few times to me). Personally, I always tried to schedule the interviews early in the morning and go to work after. Keep in mind that some interviews may run longer than others; I made up some BS excuse about coming in late, as in around 930- the interview lasted 3 hours, I didn't get in until 11 and had to cover again with more elaborate stories.
