Seeking advice on networking conversion and technical preparation.

Hi everyone,
I am an undergraduate student beginning to build my network within the finance industry. I am seeking perspective on how to best leverage my current momentum to secure an internship or analyst role.

Candidate Profile:
• School: Non-target state school
• Major: Finance and Accounting
• GPA: 4.0

Situation:
Through cold outreach, I have secured informational interviews with a few professionals. My objective is to conduct these calls with a level of professionalism that distinguishes me from the typical undergraduate candidate.

Specific Questions for the Community:
1. Navigating the Conversation: When speaking with professionals these firms, what is the most effective way to pivot the conversation from general advice to specific recruitment processes without overstepping?
2. Technical Depth: I am truly a novice in this world and don’t want to come off as ignorant nor try talking about things that are out of my depth. Are there ways to direct the conversation around my technical gaps or is it best to be upfront and honest if those kind of questions come up?
3. Strategic Focus: Given the disparity between Private Equity and Accounting, does pursuing a wide range of firms and qualifications signal a lack of focus? I want to ensure I am not diluting my story.

Thank you for your time and insight.
