Seeking Career Advice: Exploring Paths Beyond Credit Research

Hey WSO,

I’m 24 and currently working in credit research in NYC. It’s a good job, and I enjoy the work, but I can’t see myself sticking with it long term. In short, I need to make a jump to better support my goals and family.

Investment banking has naturally been on my radar, given the exit opportunities and potential for more lucrative roles down the line. I’m a pretty disciplined guy and have been through a lot, so I know I could handle the 80+ hour weeks if I had to. That said, I don’t see myself as a career banker. The only reason I’d do it is for the doors it could open.

I’m also considering roles like sales because I’m a very personable and relationship-driven guy. I’ve been described as the "glue person" on teams, someone who builds trust quickly and connects easily with new people. Without sounding egotistical, I’m tall, confident, and have a natural ability to navigate social situations, which senior colleagues have pointed out as a strength.

What I’m wondering is this: are there other roles where I can leverage these interpersonal skills, make good money, and still have some level of prestige for potential business school or buy-side opportunities down the road? I’m sure you can do well in any role if you’re good at it, but I want something that balances financial upside with a meaningful career path.

Would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Appreciate any advice!

Thanks in advance!
