Should I just be direct for potential HF internships?

Reposted this from the HF forum since this applies to job search as well, I guess. I feel that I have a solid grasp on networking for IB and PE firms but I'm a little lost on what to do for HF's. Do I just treat it like a IB firm and try to reach out to PM's or do I just aim for analysts? Do I have to add anything to my email template or just keep it the same 4-5 sentences? I feel that since the teams are smaller should I just "go for the jugular" and ask them if they have any off cycle internship opportunities? I know that it's a different culture so was looking for any pointers.
