Should I mention I play a club sport?

I play competitive college ultimate (frisbee) on a club sports team. I put in about 15-20 hrs/week with my team between workouts, practices, and tournaments. We travel across the country on a semi-weekly basis to compete against other colleges and universities. I am aware that a lot of people think it is a hippy-drug sport for dogs (it is not - it is just as competitive as most other club sports teams).

I am obviously not going to put it on my resume, but would it be appropriate to bring it up during an interview as an example of displaying xxx characteristic or how I dealt with a situation where I had to motivate some else to work harder, how I overcame some form of adversity, etc., or do I risk an automatic ding?

Please serious comments only - I have heard enough sarcastic comments about my sport to last me a lifetime.

i second that. i thought it'd be something cool, but then i saw it was ultimate frisbee... and in that case, don't do it.

everyone knows that ultimate frisbee is for those that can't get into any other sport. i dont' think people think it's a 'hippy-drug sport'; people just don't respect it.. period.

You guys have obviously never played ultimate/are not from the Northeast. I'd say it's fine, even good, to mention, if you're in an interview with someone who has an actual personality. I'd even go so far as saying, putting it on a resume won't hurt - obviously not its own line, but if you have an "Activities" or "Interests" line, it could go there.

I don't see a problem with it on the resume, even it was its own single line towards the bottom. It's unique and will make people remember your resume from others.

I wouldn't use this to answer many questions though, hopefully you have better examples of working in a team, motivating others, or overcoming adversity than when you played the defending regional champs in the 2009 semi-finals of College Ultimate Frisbee.

Club sports should be included if, for example, the school is distinguished for the sport. There are many club lacrosse and tennis teams that play other universities and do very well in competition. Ultimate frisbee may be a sport, but you do not want to include anything that may look frivolous. There are certainly other hobbies that could add more value to a resume. Remember, being professional is of the utmost importance.
