Sophomore IB internships (non-diversity)
Have heard about these Sophomore BBIB internships are out there, but don’t feel like the process is talked about at all. It seems as if recruiting is about to start. First, are these opportunities generally open to all (I.e., straight, white/Asian men included?) or only some/all diversity? Has anyone heard of straight white/asian male securing one, or is this demographic restricted? Second, is networking a part of the process for landing one of these? Third, how brushed up are effective freshmen expected to be in terms of technicals (i.e, BIWS 400 Q’s good enough, or more in-depth?) Any individual (preferably non-diversity, but open to all) that can touch on both the BB and boutique recruiting landscape would be greatly appreciated. PM’s open, too.
Following as well
Non-diverse at a semi-target. Close to 4.0 GPA and had an IB boutique freshman internship with relevant clubs on campus (objectively very good resume). Networked with BBs that my firm is a core school for, got "underhandedly" told on the phone that I have 0 chance of getting a spot and just to focus on junior year. One of my friends was told by a senior MD that it would look badly if they took him over a diverse kid. The irony is that diverse applicants who get these sophomore internships are thought of as "qualified" and "experienced", but only got them by default. The positive is that 0 banks my friends and I recruited with really cared about soph summer, just get some small boutique internship and call it a day.
Think Citi and Bofa are the only non-div ones, but even then, overwhelming majority of their soph SAs are diverse
Although apps are open to all, the only ones that get offers for sophomore SA are diversity.
Bump
just work for a smaller shop (doesn't have to be IB). Trying to get a BB internship is hard enough as a junior. As a non-diversity sophomore, it's near impossible
Hi! Fellow non-diversity sophomore here so I feel your pain. The only BBIB internship I've been able to find is Goldman's 2023 SA program in the North America.
I’ve been applying for non-sophomore positions on the advice of a few analysts I’ve spoken to at Uni networking events, since it doesn’t take that much extra effort and it’s possible you could slip through HR’s initial screening. I made it to final round interviews for two other non IB intern programs at some other financial firms that weren’t open to sophomore so I guess it’s possible, but idk how likely it is for BBIB. My guess is you’d have to be networking pretty hard to land something there.
Again, I’m just a sophomore so take everything I say with a big grain of salt. There are probably other people in the thread with way more knowledge on this than me. Also, please let me know if you find anything good in your search!
Good luck :)
