Southeast MM Bank Internships/Jobs

I'm currently a junior at a top public state (non-target) school in the Southeast and I'm looking to land a summer internship. A few middle market banks in the area hold interest meetings that I will be attending to hopefully land a SI offer. My major is Financial Management (CF emphasis), and I know a few people at a very good IB around the area. The only internship that this bank offers is a portfolio management SI to students at my school - they recruit IB at a few other, more prestigious schools. Would it be possible for me to get into the IBD even though I'm non-target? Also, could some of you with experience tell me what this Portfolio Management role would be like? I'm really not very familiar with the field at all - however, I constantly search and read about things on WSO and am trying to learn more. According to the job board, this position is paid 70/21 which I consider very nice for 60-70 hours. I'm looking to stay in the Southeast and not willing to go to NYC.

Honestly, I'm just looking for advice from some fellow monkeys. My strong suit is technology (resume includes 2.5+ years at a tech support desk, CTO of an educational software start-up, VP of Finance for a large student org) and I thoroughly enjoy reading tech news sites and keeping up with that industry. How could I use this talent to benefit me in the finance industry? Any tips are greatly appreciated. Also, any recommendations on what banks to look at in the SE for a student in my position?

ST IBD is not THAT hard to get into, if i were you i would shoot for SA (depending on your GPA and how good your experience is etc.)

if you go to UGA or something they def hire kids into IBD. Although Emory and GA Tech are preferred probably. They also take lots of vandy, unc, UVA, etc kids
