Summer interview to FT consideration?

Would appreciate some advice from anyone who’s been in a similar situation.

I’m at a UK university, graduating in 2027. Did a BB IB summer this year but didn’t convert, so I’m applying for summers again and potentially doing a master’s afterwards.

I have a first round coming up at a mid-market bank for a summer internship. I’m interested in the team, but noticed the bank also has a 2027 FT opening in a different team. There isn’t an advertised FT vacancy in the team interviewing me.

I’d be happy with either a summer or FT, and interested in either team. If the interview goes well, would it be reasonable to ask HR whether my interviewing team could consider me for FT despite not having a vacancy advertised? Or would applying separately to the existing FT opening make more sense?

Happy to do additional interviews or a separate process. Just don’t want to come across as uninterested in the summer or complicate an opportunity I already have.

The FT deadline is around the time of my first round, so waiting until the summer process finishes probably isn’t an option.

Would you raise it with the interviewer, ask HR afterwards, or apply separately? Interested to hear if anyone has been in this position and how it worked out.

i wouldn't mention the FT role. i would focus on the summer, and then on converting if i got it (and often times you can start FT immediately after the summer if you've graduated uni and they have space).

reason being that FT roles are super competitive and usually won't go to kids who only have an SA with no return offer. the people who are getting FT roles directly are SAs who can go shopping with their return offer, or people (typically europeans) who've done multiple off-cycles.

it's statistically easier to get a SA position than a FT anyway, and you'll have a leg up on other penultimate years who have minimal internship experience.
