SWE Internship for Quant Research Aspirations
Hello!
Rising sophomore CS & Math major at a top US university, aiming for Quant Research. My research internship applications haven't gotten past screenings.
Several firms offer SWE internships. Is an SWE internship a good stepping stone for Quant Research, given my research application struggles?
Looking for advice on:
- Value of SWE internship for aspiring Quant Researchers (considering research app rejections)
- SWE vs. Research internship: pros and cons at this stage
- Relevant skills from SWE internships for Quant Research
Thanks for your insights!

SWE vs. Research Internship: Pros and Cons
SWE Internship
Pros: - Technical Skills: Gain hands-on experience with coding, software development, and problem-solving. - Industry Exposure: Understand the practical applications of computer science and mathematics in a professional setting. - Networking: Build connections within the tech industry, which can be beneficial for future opportunities.
Cons: - Lack of Direct Research Experience: May not provide direct experience in quantitative research methodologies or financial modeling.
Research Internship
Pros: - Research Skills: Directly develop skills in quantitative analysis, data interpretation, and financial modeling. - Academic Alignment: Aligns closely with academic pursuits and future career goals in quant research.
Cons: - Competitive: As you've experienced, research internships can be highly competitive and difficult to secure. - Limited Technical Exposure: May not offer as much hands-on coding experience as an SWE internship.

If you want to do QR then software experience is of course very useful, it would ideal if you can incorporate any mathematical finance into what you're doing. The biggest factor would be what kind of work are you doing and what teams your work would impact. If it's swe and not really impact to finance then maybe it's not as useful as swe where you have some direct impact on a trading team like maybe you build some tools for that team
Thanks for the previous advice! I've been actively applying to SWE roles since then, and I'm starting to see some progress. I've cleared a few OA rounds and had two technical interviews that I felt went well. Unfortunately, I haven't received any offers yet. I'm worried I may be running out of options for QR or SWE internships. I've taken courses in algorithms, machine learning, C/assembly, probability, linear algebra, and differential equations. Any advice on how to leverage this background to get internship? It's been a struggle.
