The truth
Okay, I'll keep this as brief as I can, I'll start off with the situation and then the question.
Situation:
22 years old
UK national, comes from a non target University, - studied Business Management & Finance, degree classification 2:2 (about 57%)
Studying now towards a Mathematics and Statistics degree with the open university - expected graduation approximately 2014
- Whilst I'm studying towards this degree I'm living in Spain - studying Spanish (self taught - but hoping to complete a Spanish language DELE qualification at a Spanish university)
- Currently working in English speaking bars and clubs - will soon try Spanish bars
After graduating from my maths degree I hope to complete a corporate finance degree at a Spanish university
I've been contacting a number of MM M&A firms across Spain with zero luck - had minimal responses from my queries about internships and basically getting involved in the M&A community within Spain - I was hoping to network..
so theres my current situation... heres the question.
What are my chances of actually breaking into M&A or any financial discipline (internship) in Spain - I know about the unemployment levels, but would you hire somebody like myself (I have ZERO M&A/Finance work experience, my Spanish language level isn't great - I wouldn't be able to conduct a deal with my current level, but its why I'm here, to learn). - Almost all the M&A firms I've contacted speak English when carrying out deals as far as I know. - But I'm not looking for full time employment, paid/unpaid internships will suit me right down to the ground.
Other general questions regarding breaking into M&A in Spain...
- Do you know of any events throughout Spain I could attend to hopefully network a little
- If you know of any firms I may have overlooked I would be more than great full of hearing them, I've applied to a few of the large firms but I think I would stand more chance in MM - Boutiques.
I think thats all for now, but I'm sure I'll have more questions.
Thanks for your time.
Matt
Pure cold calling doesn't always work...you need to do it in large quantities. Try finding out people you can connect with that went to your school or have some similar interest or background. Then maybe those people know someone - that's networking.
