UF cancels Computer Science

So one of the largest Florida schools is cancelling its CS program of all things. Whether or not this will be acted out remains to be seen but to make such a claim is outright insulting.

well, this sounds like a fucking stupid idea

UF's athletic department is self-sustaining and does not receive university funds. Funds can only go from the UAA to the university, not the other way around.

In addition, the profit from basketball and football is enough to run all the other sports at UF.

Furthermore, the UF UAA makes donations every year of a couple million bucks to the university to help alleviate the budget pressure on some departments.

In conclusion, the author is making much ado about nothing and has a sensationalist headline to get views.

Just because you've demonstrated no link between the decreased CS budget, and increased football budget, doesn't mean there is "much ado about nothing". Even if you take out every reference to football in the article, it's still pretty mind blowing that a major Uni would just blow away its entire CS department. Maybe it was the wrong angle to associate that with the football culture but really, the issue stands alone. Who the fuck thinks it's a good idea to do away with Computer Science in today's market?

It's pretty obvious that the only reason the football references are in the article is to bang the "Athletics vs. Academics" drum loudly enough to get views. Of course the issue stands alone, but the writer is a hack.

It's important to note that the state of Florida is deploying millions and millions of dollars for a new Florida Polytechnic University with the express goal of graduating more STEM students. One could make the argument that Florida isn't limiting Computer Science/STEM money, but redirecting from an old, staid institution with an entrenched bureaucracy to a new dynamic one with a more explicit goal of producing job-ready STEM grads. Selective reporting by Forbes.

IlliniProgrammerFor those who think I'm crazy when I say we may have hit high tide on libertarianism, good luck defending this in the next Florida governor race.

To what extent is this selective reporting? You can't justify removing all the graduate students and faculty in a department at the present and say it may or may not be better in the long run because we're "working on a better school". It was also the decision of the University as far as I'm aware to cut the funding for this specific program.

And what do you mean much ado about nothing? The university is legit going to cancel its CS program and who knows how they'll spin this for the kids currently enrolled. No matter what, there is no way this looks good to employers when you obtained some cheap degree from a department no longer in existence.

You make a point with the writer doing something that I absolutely loath about journalism... but getting rid of your CS department? As an intended CS major, I would be ridiculously outraged if my school did that... absolutely pissed.
