UK University to job in the USA?
Hey guys, I'm a student at a top-target in London. However, have recently become more and more keen to work in the US. Seems very tough, if not impossible, to get summer internships in the US though unless you study there.
What would be the best course of action? MFin in the US e.g. MIT? Work for a few years in London and then transfer?
Would appreciate any help!
Grad school or work in London first. You’re right that it’s near impossible (if not outright impossible) to make the move from a non-US school to the US
Thanks, do you know about the possibilities of getting into IB after doing an MFin in the US? Heard that it’s very much undergrad focused
Yeah it is undergrad focused but it’s not impossible to break in with a MFin, especially if it’s a 2-year one like Princeton’s (it gives you room for a summer internship)
The only exception to this seems to be Canadian targets
Not really. Only Ivey used to send a good amount to the US, but in recent years, their pipelines have dried up and they only send a handful
Multiple ideas to achieve this:
1) Apply for international internships in the US (you do qualify for the J visa)
2) Graduate and start working in the UK, then transfer on L, H, or E visa
3) Further studies in the US after UG in the UK. Then you would qualify for F1 and CPT/OPT. Ultimate goal to land H1 and then GC.
4) After graduation in the UK, you could try for a H1 sponsorship from abroad. Unlikely to happen, but it is possible and legally permitted.
5) Any form of family sponsorship is possible
6) Transfer from your school now if you want to attend a US school and see whether it makes sense (it usually does not) and then see 3) above
7) Participate in the diversity lottery if you qualify; you might win the green card
8) Self sponsor immigration to the US based on extraordinary abilities/NIW (if you are a known person in the field of business, sports, research, etc)
9) Do working holiday program in Canada and then PNP/Canadian experience/EE/SFW route in Canada; it is faster to become a Canadian citizen and you'd then qualify for the TN visa (this step is a more complicated workaround and probably not ideal; however, Canada has some "lifestyle elements" of the US and might be another avenue to the US)
10) If you qualify for or already have Australian citizenship, you would qualify for the E-3 visa in the US
I am sure there are other ways I forgot to mention.
