Unique GPA Issue
I just submitted all my applications to banks last week, and so far have received several first rounds. There is an issue with the GPA on my resume, and I wanted to get some input on it. When I submitted my banking applications, my resume said
GPA: 3.1, Departmental GPA: 3.7
When I handed the applications in, these were my grades to the best of my knowledge, as grades from 1st semester had not come out yet. I received my grades from last semester, and while my cumulative GPA is still a 3.1, my departmental is substantially lower (3.3). The 3.7 was based on a single class that I took as a sophomore, which most people take as juniors. I took 3 major courses this fall, and while I was expecting to get higher grades, I ended up with B, B, B+. Although I did not do anything dishonest, I am worried about the .4 difference in my submitted versus actual departmental GPA. Should I address this immediately at my 1st rounds, or address it with HR before interviews? Or after? What do you think?
PS I attend a top target, HYP
If you don't go to Princeton, then you're screwed. Harvard and Yale both inflate their grades so heavily, that, if you have a 3.1 from either school, you're probably certifiably retarded. (At least Yale used to inflate grades badly... I heard they took steps to correct this in 01/02. Not sure if it's still rampant). Princeton has pretty bad grade deflation, so a 3.1 is actually not that bad.
Anyway, listing "department GPA" when you have completed 1 course is a bit dishonest, no? When major GPA is that much higher than cumulative GPA, it usually draws red flags anyway. I think that your getting an interview with a cum. 3.1 (if you didn't shadily hide this on your resume) demonstrates that its something other than grades for which the firms selected you, thus, I don't think it would be a major issue.
call up HR
b, thanks for the reply. I do go to a school with heavy grade deflation. Do you think it would be a good idea to call up HR and explain my situation?
I wouldn't say anything.
