US recruitment from Canada

Hey folks - I am a Canadian and curious about moving to the US (for obvious reasons; US market is significantly better and more dynamic with a lot more interesting stuff happening across the border).

My background is in IB (Canadian boutique) followed by a few years in PC (lower to MM direct lending - VP level). I've enjoyed PC and ideally want to stick to it.

I am curious to hear from folks who've done it and learn about your experience:
- Did you go through a recruiter or apply directly?
- Did anyone do cold reach-outs and if so, how did that go?
- Was the TN visa a pain? How did you handle that with the employers?
- How did you position your candidacy and convince them to bring over a Canadian?

Any advice or past experience would be super helpful!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about transitioning from Canada to the US for a career in Private Credit (PC) or Investment Banking (IB):

  1. Recruiter vs. Direct Application:

    • Many Canadians have found success through recruiters, especially those familiar with cross-border placements. Headhunters often screen for US work eligibility upfront, so being prepared to discuss your visa situation is crucial.
    • Direct applications can work, but networking is often more effective. Alumni networks, LinkedIn, and personal connections in the US are invaluable.
  2. Cold Reach-Outs:

    • Cold reach-outs can be effective if done strategically. Highlight your unique experience and why you're interested in the US market. Tailor your message to the firm and role, and emphasize your readiness to relocate.
    • Some WSO threads suggest that being physically present in the US for networking (e.g., attending events or scheduling coffee chats) can significantly improve your chances.
  3. TN Visa Challenges:

    • The TN visa is a common route for Canadians, but it can be tricky for roles like IB or PC since these don’t fall directly under the "Economist" classification.
    • Employers may hesitate due to the perceived complexity of the process. To address this, be proactive in explaining the TN visa process and how your role aligns with the "Economist" classification (e.g., economic valuation, analyzing trends).
    • Some firms, like GS, Evercore, Moelis, and Lazard, have been known to sponsor TN visas, but success rates can vary.
  4. Positioning Your Candidacy:

    • Emphasize your relevant experience, especially if you’ve worked on notable deals or have strong technical skills.
    • Build a credible narrative about why you want to move to the US (e.g., exposure to larger deals, more dynamic market).
    • Highlight any US connections or experience (e.g., transactions involving US clients, prior work in the US).
  5. Additional Tips:

    • Networking is critical. Use Canadian long weekends or vacations to visit the US and meet people in person.
    • Be prepared for challenging interview logistics, including multiple rounds (phone, case studies, final in-person interviews).
    • If you secure a role, some firms may transition you from a TN visa to an H-1B for longer-term stability.

Have a few friends who’ve made the switch or are actively trying to make it right now, so happy to share some colour.

I’ll be honest unless you’re coming from a top-tier institutional Canadian platform (think CPP Capital Solutions, Sagard, Northleaf, OTPP), you generally won’t get much traction with U.S. buyside credit shops, especially at the VP level.
