US/Irish Dual Citizen w/ Vanguard FP&A Internship — FT Finance in London/Ireland?

Hey everyone,

I’m a dual US + Irish citizen and currently a 3rd-year at a semi-target in the US. This summer I’ll be doing an FP&A internship at Vanguard. I also have 2 prior internships, including one in Europe.

Long term, I want to work in Portfolio Management / Asset Management / Equity Research, and I’m exploring full-time opportunities in London or Ireland after graduation if i cant get into Vanguard's IMDP. I only speak English.

A few questions for anyone who has recruited or worked there recently:

1) What’s the entry-level market like right now in London vs Dublin for AM/PM/ER?
Coming from FP&A + prior internship experience, how realistic is breaking into AM/ER directly?

2) What does the recruiting timeline look like?
In the US, a lot of structured recruiting (especially for finance) starts very early.

  • Is London similar with formal autumn analyst cycles?
  • Or is it more rolling / opportunistic hiring?

3) When should I realistically start networking + applying if I’m targeting a post-grad start in AM/ER?

If anyone has made the US → London/Dublin move into buy-side or research roles, would really appreciate insight on positioning and networking strategy.

Thanks in advance.

Breaking into Asset Management (AM), Portfolio Management (PM), or Equity Research (ER) in London or Dublin as a US/Irish dual citizen with FP&A and prior internship experience is definitely achievable, but it requires a strategic approach. Here's what you need to know:

1) Entry-Level Market in London vs Dublin for AM/PM/ER

  • London: The London market is highly competitive but offers significantly more opportunities in AM/PM/ER compared to Dublin. Major global asset managers, hedge funds, and investment firms are headquartered or have a strong presence in London. However, competition is fierce, and candidates with prior buy-side or sell-side experience, strong academic credentials, and relevant certifications (e.g., CFA) are often preferred.
  • Dublin: Dublin's financial sector is smaller but growing, particularly in areas like fund administration and back-office roles. While there are opportunities in AM/PM/ER, they are more limited compared to London. However, being an Irish citizen could give you an edge in navigating the local market.

Coming from FP&A and with prior internship experience, breaking directly into AM/ER is realistic, especially if you can demonstrate strong analytical skills, a passion for investing, and a clear understanding of the industry. Highlighting your Vanguard experience and any exposure to investment-related tasks will be key.

2) Recruiting Timeline in London vs Dublin

  • London: The recruiting timeline for entry-level roles in AM/ER in London is structured but less rigid than in the US. Many firms have formal autumn analyst cycles, with applications opening in the summer and interviews taking place in the fall. However, there are also rolling and opportunistic hiring processes, especially for smaller firms or boutique asset managers.
  • Dublin: The timeline in Dublin is less structured, with more emphasis on networking and direct applications. Opportunities may arise throughout the year, so staying proactive and monitoring job boards is crucial.

3) When to Start Networking and Applying

  • Networking: Start networking as early as possible. Building relationships with professionals in the industry can help you uncover hidden opportunities and gain valuable insights. Use LinkedIn to connect with alumni, attend industry events, and leverage your dual citizenship to connect with professionals in both the US and Europe.
  • Applications: If you're targeting a post-graduation start, begin applying during the summer before your final year for structured programs in London. For Dublin or rolling opportunities, start applying 6-9 months before your desired start date.

Positioning and Networking Strategy

  • Leverage Your Vanguard Experience: Emphasize any investment-related tasks or projects you worked on during your FP&A internship. If possible, seek out opportunities to collaborate with the investment management team or gain exposure to portfolio analysis.
  • Certifications: Consider pursuing the CFA Level 1 exam to demonstrate your commitment to a career in AM/ER. This is highly regarded in both London and Dublin.
  • Tailor Your Resume: Highlight your analytical skills, attention to detail, and any experience with financial modeling or investment analysis. If you have a personal investment portfolio or have conducted independent equity research, include this as well.
  • Networking: Focus on connecting with professionals in London and Dublin who work in AM/ER. Reach out to alumni from your university, attend industry events, and join relevant online forums or groups.
  • Dual Citizenship: Use your dual citizenship to your advantage by emphasizing your ability to work in both the US and Europe without visa restrictions.

By starting early, leveraging your experience, and strategically networking, you can position yourself for success in the competitive AM/ER markets in London and Dublin.
