Waiting For Official Offer For Two Months Already
Hi everyone. Two months ago on 6/30, I finally got a verbal offer for a quant job with a mutual fund in nyc. I thought I would get the official offer letter quite soon but unfortunately I've been waiting for two months now. I've been sending follow-up emails to the internal recruiter about once a week, but he just kept saying they were still waiting for the final approval from a "senior person". And he didn't reply to my email or answer my phone call last week. Below is the timeline:
6/28 final on-site interview 6/30 verbal offer ... 7/24 the recruiter claims headcount and budget have been approved, just need one more sign-off from a senior person in leadership team 8/2 the senior person just came back from vacation and was too busy; switched to a new senior person to sign-off 8/8 emailed hiring manager and he said the internal recruiter was working on the sign-off... he apologized for the delay 8/15 internal recruiter told me he's still positive... but the timing was unfortunate 8/21 emailed internal recruiter and still no response
I have a job right now so financially I'm okay but I cannot stop worrying if I can get this job because it is my ideal one. Please share your thinking. Thank you so much!

Very odd situation. There are two things that may be happening:
1) They may really have a dysfunctional hiring process. I was in a somewhat similar situation a few months ago where I went through on-site interview and believed that was the final step. After following up the next week, I was told there would be a case study that I would need to complete. I was then told the following week the case study would need to be cleared by legal and then I could receive it. After following up for a few weeks, HR told me they would have to shut down hiring process for the role due to internal changes within the group.
2) Other scenario: They are interviewing other people. A verbal offer without a written offer holds very little weight (as I have learned in the past).
I know how frustrating it can be when this occurs, but all you can do at this point is follow up on a weekly basis and see if there are other opportunities you can get into process with that makes sense for you at this stage of your career. Take this hiring process as another piece of criteria for evaluating if this is the right firm for you.
Thanks for the insight! Yeah it's so frustrating. For scenario 2) I asked the hiring manager a month ago and he said they no longer reviewed resumes... I emailed him today but no response yet. I hope it's not gonna be an endless wait.
Technically, the hiring manager's response does not mean they have not been interviewing other people. It could mean they have stopped accepted any new resume submissions.
My best advice (after following up on a semi-weekly basis) is just proceed with other processes and focus on work plus family to try to your mind off this particular job process.
Thanks! He replied my email yesterday evening and said they are still working on getting the sign-off on their side. He will touch base with me on Friday if I dont hear back from him earlier. Such a confusing process and i dont know what to do now...
Email the people that you interviewed with and keep recruiting in case anything happens.
