What are some impressive questions you have asked during an informational interview?

I would love to hear stories of a time you asked an awesome question during an informational interview and how the person reacted/ responded. Also, any tips on how to come up with some great questions that aren't the same tips you see everywhere would be appreciated.

On a serious note, an informational interview is akin to a first date — everyone knows why you’ve there.

Your goal is to come off as polished and interested. Someone who won’t expose the banker to reputational risk by referring you.

Ask them about their background, how they like their group, their favorite deal, etc.

Be sure to actively listen and ask follow-up questions if they arise.

You’ll get better at this sort of thing the more you do it. Happy hunting!

This.  You’re literally never going to ask someone a question that is so inspiring that they instantly want to give you an interview.  Everyone has heard and answered these questions 100x and asked them when they were in your position.  As someone who did well during this process - your goal is to come off as a normal, articulate person.  The questions don’t matter that much.  If you come off as unconfident, nervous, can’t hold a conversation, etc. then your questions aren’t going to matter.
