What is market TC for corp dev assoc in 2025?

Coming up on my 2 years in IB and got an inbound by HH for a corp dev role at an industrials F500 in HCOL city. The team is extremely lean (currently 3 people) and I would be their 4th hire. They report directly to the CFO and work a lot with them though haven't done much M&A from reading the news recently. Not sure if pay will be above market / what is market for corp dev? Like mid-200s?

Also not sure if I will get worked super hard in this role if it is that lean and I'm coming in as the most junior (trying to avoid anything 60+ hours)... what are your guys thoughts?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, total compensation (TC) for a Corporate Development Associate in 2025 at an F500 company in a high-cost-of-living (HCOL) city would likely fall in the range of $150K to $200K, with some variation depending on the company, industry, and specific role. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Compensation:

    • Base Salary: Typically ranges from $110K to $150K.
    • Bonus: Can range from 20% to 40% of base salary, depending on company performance and individual contributions.
    • Stock Options/Equity: Often included, with vesting periods (e.g., 5 years), which can push total comp higher over time.

For a lean team like the one described, where you report directly to the CFO, there’s a chance the pay could be slightly above market, especially if they value your IB experience and need someone to take on significant responsibilities.

  2. Hours:

    • Corporate Development roles generally offer better work-life balance compared to IB. For a lean team, you might expect 40-50 hours per week, but during tight deal deadlines or major projects, it could spike to 50-60 hours. However, this is still significantly less than IB hours.
  3. Market Comparison:

    • For reference, a Senior Associate/Senior Manager in Corp Dev typically earns $200K-$275K in total comp, as noted in WSO threads. As an Associate, you’d likely be on the lower end of this range unless the role is unusually demanding or high-profile.
  4. Role Considerations:

    • If the team hasn’t done much M&A recently, your workload might lean more toward strategic projects, financial modeling, and internal initiatives rather than constant deal execution. This could mean fewer hours but also less exposure to M&A-heavy experience.

In summary, mid-200s TC might be a bit high for an Associate-level role unless the company is offering above-market pay due to the lean team structure or high expectations. A more realistic range would be $150K-$200K, with potential upside from bonuses and equity. If avoiding 60+ hour weeks is a priority, this role seems promising, but you should clarify expectations during the interview process.
