You are a commodity to them. They don't care about you except to the extent that you are a means to a pay check.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.

I've encountered the same situation. I think oftentimes the recruiter has a broad mandate when trying to fill a position and will reach out to a bunch of different people from different groups, banks, backgrounds, schools, etc. Especially the case when they're trying to fill IB analyst positions at BB banks or associate positions at generalist PE firms. You have to consider that they are emailing prospective candidates from all types of banks (BB, MM, boutique, etc.), consulting firms (MBB through the little guys), and potentially also people in industry.

People tend to think life is a race with other people. They don't realize that every moment they spend sprinting towards the finish line is a moment they lose permanently, and a moment closer to their death.

You have to tell them what they want to here plus unique skills that you can bring to the role. Search the interview Q & As on this site. Also be prepared to answer in detail why you want to work there. Do your research on the company and industry ahead of time. Come up with potential answers to interview questions before they call you.

Do you know my buddy Aaron Burr?

Probably better not to ask last I heard the relationship is pretty strained.

"Yes. Money has been a little bit tight lately, but at the end of my life, when I'm sitting on my yacht, am I gonna be thinking about how much money I have? No. I'm gonna be thinking about how many friends I have and my children and my comedy albums."
