Why would they care?

Came across a thread on someone contemplating to renege. Lots of folk saying he might lose the the other offer if they find out he reneged on the first.

I cannot believe that is a an actual risk.

First - why would a firm care if you reneged on an offer to come there? You have the right as an employee to quit before the start of your work. In fact you haven’t ‘reneged’, you have resigned.

Second - they need a reason for terminating you. At least in most jurisdictions. The fact that you have RESIGNED at a former firm is not a viable cause for termination.

Am I missing something? Sounds like a load of bull crap that folks have lost offers due to reneging on others

First of all, at least I’m the US they do not need a reason for termination. At will employment means they can fire you for no reason at all

Secondly, most people don’t care too much but the reason they would care is because the old firm would feel slighted and if they want to keep a good relationship with the old firm it’s a lot easier to get rid of an intern just to make another firm happy than to tarnish your relationships with other firms
