Q&A: Building a Banking Career Beyond the Front Office — Global Operations, Commercial Banking and Leadership

I’ve recently joined WSO as a mentor and thought I would introduce myself through a Q&A.

A little about my background:

  • Spent more than 20 years with a major international bank
  • Progressed through retail, commercial and wholesale banking into regional and global executive roles
  • Worked across the UK, Europe, Asia and international financial centres
  • Led large, multicultural operations teams supporting global banking businesses
  • Held responsibility for business growth, operational delivery, transformation, risk and regulatory matters
  • Helped establish a new banking operation and later led regulated commercial and wholesale banking businesses
  • Now work as an accredited executive coach and mentor, particularly with leaders and technical professionals navigating greater responsibility or career change

My career did not follow the conventional investment-banking route. It was built through commercial banking, international assignments, operations, transformation and people leadership.

I would be happy to answer questions about:

  • Building a successful banking career outside investment banking
  • Commercial banking, wholesale banking, trade finance and global operations
  • Moving from a technical or operational role into broader leadership
  • Deciding whether management is genuinely the right next step
  • Building visibility without becoming overly self-promotional
  • Working across different countries, cultures and time zones
  • Handling career setbacks, difficult transitions or confidence challenges
  • Preparing for interviews and presenting your experience more effectively
  • Translating technical achievements into a stronger résumé and career story
  • What senior leaders notice when assessing emerging talent
  • Lessons I learned—and mistakes I made—during an international banking career

For clarity, I am not an M&A, private-equity or financial-modelling specialist. My strongest areas are commercial and wholesale banking, operations, global trade, transformation, risk, leadership and career development. If a question falls outside my experience, I’ll say so rather than manufacture an answer.

Please post any questions below. I’ll answer as openly and practically as I can.
