2019 Summer Plans

Out of curiosity, what are you ladies and gents doing this summer? Any exciting plans? I haven't had a single day off since I started with the exception of a funeral recently, and have been told that I can finally put some of that PTO to use once shit dies down during the dog days.

I myself and finalizing the plan for a trip to Barcelona (my favorite city) with three of my friends likely in June. I also want to hit at least one major EDM festival--my eyes are set on EDC Vegas (Coachella and Ultra Miami are a little too soon). Will likely hit Electric Zoo as well. This stuff will probably see me take one or two more days off, which brings me to my assumed acceptable limit. Burning Man (per my last post) is most certainly on my agenda but won't materialize for at least a couple of years. Other than that, I just wanna do more stuff around New England and the Northeast. Just meet lots of new people and just get out there and experience stuff. I'm really looking forward to the slower months and free-er weekends that I caught the tail end of when I started.

I know a lot of you will still be busting you asses at work or, even worse, interning, but regardless I waited almost a full year to have some fun away from work, so I'm amped. So, do any of you have some exciting plans? I'd love to hear, and hopefully get some ideas too. Thanks.

Will be going to Europe for a month before starting training, excited for my last trip as a free human before cuffing myself to the desk haha

For those of you looking to find cheap tickets for traveling, I highly recommend Skiplagged.com

I did four days Seoul and 15 days Japan two years ago in August. It was beautiful. From Seoul I took the plain to Fukuoka and then made my way to Hiroshima, Kyoto, Hakone and Tokyo. I really want to do it again.

If you're doing EDC Vegas you should take more than a couple of days - do Wed-Mon to get the full experience. There are EDC pre-parties all over Vegas that week.

As for summer plans, I'm going to Antibes and Cannes for two weeks with some friends and a couple of days in Marbella with my family.

I don't know... Yeah. Almost definitely yes.

Thanks for the input. Definitely high on my list since over the past couple days I've been informed of some unfortunate "security" concerns regarding Electric Zoo surrounding their acceptance of certain party favors. EDC definitely seems more worth it, so I'd be down to take a some serious time to get the full experience.

Going to Japan for the first time next week. Would appreciate any recommendations.

Some friends and I are thinking of going to Bonnaroo this year, and later in August I'm visiting a friend in Vancouver. EDC would be amazing. I've never been to Barcelona but have been to Madrid and Seville. A lot of people say it's their favorite city in Spain/Europe too, what do you like about it?

Bonnaroo looks awesome. Really wanna go at some point. I spent a lot of time in Seville and loved it there as well.

Regarding Barcelona, I think the city pretty much has it all. Aside from being an architecturally stunning city with a rich and interesting social/cultural history, it is jam packed with tons of things to do for all ages. For me, I love the nightlife and beach scene when I wanna get sloshed or just relax. Also a big fan of sports towns with intense fans (I am from Boston haha). Everyone I met there was really friendly, and the people seem to have a chill view on life. The only thing that I don't think is perfect there is the food. It's good, but not on par with France and definitely a step down from Italy (as an Italian America, I may be a little biased on that one).

Woah, if you're into seafood Barcelona is on par with pretty much any city in the world. Have you tried some of the good tapas restaurants or traditional Catalan ones? I can highly recommend Dos Palillos (asian fusion tapas) or Gaig (traditional tapas), they're only c10 blocks from each other. Fonda Espana and Gresca are two others with traditional Catalan cuisine that's reasonably priced and very good. Once you get off La Rambla there are numerous very nice restaurants.

I don't know... Yeah. Almost definitely yes.

Everyone should have a hazy night in their life with at least a brief Opium visit. Something about euro-electro music with access to a beach is pretty hard to beat.

Valencia is another great Spanish city to visit and is easy to get to from Barcelona. Amazing food (big on their tapas as many Spanish cities are) and a great vibe albeit different than Barcelona in spite of their proximity. The science museum turns into a nightclub late-night... I haven't come across that building use combo anywhere else.

Keeping it domestic this year - just paid for a ring and have a wedding next year to worry about. We're spending a week in DC in the spring and a week and a half in LA/on the beach in the fall.

From the area, I highly recommend a restaurant in Georgetown called Le Chaumerie. Opened in 1976 and prices/menu have stayed the same, but was rated the best restaurant in the US by Travel + Leisure in I think it was 2017. DEFINITELY get both of the desserts they ask you to order at the start of your dinner (they ask in the beginning because they take time to prepare). The duck was amazing

Eat herring the Dutch way in Amsterdam, and engage in some explicit actions over there. Prices are negotiable.

Going to Scotland in July. Start of with couple of days in Edinburgh and finish with a couple of days in Glasgow, with 5 days in between of living on a canal boat going through the various canals. You receive lessons on how to move the swing gates/canal bridges so that your boat can pass through. Should be a fun way to see the quieter side of life, seeing ancient churches, cemeteries and villages of stone cottages and then when you went to stretch your legs, are hungry or want wet your whistle... stop wherever you spot a pub! :)

I plan to drive across the country again this summer. East coast to Colorado. Did it twice in 2018.

Probably going to hit up some casinos on the way there and back for tournament poker. I like Cherokee NC, Hollywood Casino St. Louis, and then ending up in Black Hawk CO (elevation 8,537) for more poker and sleep in Black Hawk, then train the last couple weeks at a lower altitude (Boulder - 5,328). Its an hour commute back and forth. I hope to observe the oxygen saturation levels of my blood during this time period before the race.

Ironman Race in Boulder is on 6/9/19, so planning to acclimate at altitude playing poker and sleeping in Black Hawk.

During the day, I'll train at 5,XXX feet and plan to get a lot of Kaviar Sativa joints to bring with me on the rides in the mountains. Probably at least two weeks of just cruising through the mountains doing some final training with a little puff puff on the breaks as I consume 5000 calories per day.

Then headed back in June. Possibly hitting up New Orleans and some casinos around there. I like Beau Rivage. Best Bet is on the way back in Jacksonville - usually has some good tournaments.

Then wrapping up the 1 mile training for 5th Ave in NYC. Plan is to be sub 5(hrs) in April 70.3 and sub 5(min) in the September mile.

Should be a sick year.

What do you do that allows you this type of flexibility?

Flexibility is required for me. I did the whole office thing from 2006-2007 and just got out of that realm largely then. I told one of my managers that I wanted to leave the office and never really looked back. I worked for them for another few years remotely in another city and then have been starting to work on my own projects since 2010. I did have a stint in automotive analytics and neuroscience analytics, but only the former really tied me down to an office. I'm not really that big on a bunch of mindless meetings. If we can all collaborate by computer and just work on things remotely and efficiently and save real estate costs for office space and maintenance, I'm all for that.

If you are finally going to Barcelona, you could also come to Valencia (3 hrs by car). Cool places to eat, beaches, sun, party...hit me up and I'll show you around.

I am also planning on going to Barcelona for a week in July but for different reasons !

Have fun

I love Valencia. I lived there for 6 months. One of the best times of my life.

Wow you guys are doing some awesome stuff. I'll be working at a healthcare focused bank this summer, but I might make a trip up to NYC before it starts!

I'm so insanely jealous. I wanted to try to do Ultra but kinda underestimated how quickly March would come up when I started thinking about plans. The lineup for Ultra looked fucking psychotic. I especially wanna see Eric Prydz live sometime. I hear his visuals are outta this world.
