It's like a person's brain is designed to always comfort itself through any means of thinking necessary, which is ironically self-destructive, whereas acknowledging difficult truths is the first step towards self-improvement.
Yeah, these all take a great deal of discipline and willpower. Definitely not the path of least resistance.
Personally I have found that if I try to communicate anything meaningful I've learned about life it will probably sound like some sort of cliche. But that's just how cliches are...they sound trite until you internalize them through experience. So in a sense you're right, it's specific experiences and actions that actually lets someone attribute meaning to any of these things, but at the same time I think it's helpful to always be refining and reevaluating the map you use to steer the ship.
