The House on Thursday approved legislation that could set in motion changes in Puerto Rico's 112-year relationship with the United States, including a transition to statehood or independence.
the Puerto Rican government would be authorized to conduct a second vote and people would choose among four options: statehood, independence, the current commonwealth status or sovereignty in association with the United States. Congress would have to vote on whether Puerto Rico becomes a state.

Wow, that's really cool. Id love to see an extra state added in our life time, though I don't know if Puerto Rico is going to by into statehood given America's current conditions.
My bet is they will hold off for a couple years, ask for congress to hold the same vote, and then reassess the American political and economic climate.
You think anybody would jump at being an American state, but protectorate status is probably best for the Puerto Ricans, shear autonomy may not necessarily be in their best interests....though it's not like people invade countries any more for nothing but new land.

They do not currently pay any income taxes. They will most likely vote for status quo, as they generally do.
Lets get Guam on this band wagon! make it 52 so that we have a nice even number again. The problem is that Wake Island would likely get all pissy and attempt statehood. Then we would be F-ed again with an odd number. Maybe we can try to grab New Foundland or something. Teddy Roosevelt would be all over this if it were a serious option!

I don't like this idea, actually. I'm not gonna pretend I know jack about Puerto Rico, but won't this mean more social service tax dollars we have to spend over there? I think the island is fairly poor, and would just add to our federal government's liability (more people to take care of).
Politics aside, Puerto Ricans are cool. One of my good friends is a Puerto Rican MMA fighter, he's a crazy-ass mofo. Got depressed when his dog died and shot himself in the abdomen, lived through it, went back to fighting after a few weeks, and completely F-d up this huge Ukranian guy. I'm talking completely rearranged his face. Anyway that's completely off topic...
As a territory they are currently able to collect cash from U.S. social programs, but they do not have to pay income taxes. Statehood would actually save the current U.S. tax payer cash, but not really that much
