Access, Mods and WSO SS vs. Certified User Group

Hey guys, so after struggling for permissions to make it so mods can't see the content of this group, I think it might be a that the marginal cost has passed the marginal utility. The group content will be private to 99.9% of the users on the site.

Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this group because ideally we could engage the Certified Users and make that private group more active so that it becomes a stronger force and encourages 1) more users to become Certified as they hear about real life connections / help being given and 2) Certified users that have left to become active again.

I think that would be much more beneficial to the community, it's participation rate, etc. I mean, that is really what the Certified User group was created for in the first place. We also still have a pretty high bar to become a certified user -- which is one of the reasons we only have a bit over 100.

Thoughts? Patrick

Hey Patrick. Definitely understand your perspective on this. Just a couple thoughts.

A private member-run organization on WSO isn't a substitute for the rest of the site- or even the certified user system. Rather, it's a complementary kind of thing. A private group for the experienced users means more time spent on WSO- especially if the reason a lot of us are in the group was that we were helping the new folks. This is really where your investment in the site starts compounding. Rather than you having put in all of this work to build this community, the community is now building on itself.

Yeah, completely get the logic behind the group - I just see the Certified User group as already pre-selected as the "experienced users" and the group that is helping the new users. Just because some of them have been less active over the past few months I don't think takes away from all they did to help WSO and does not necessarily make them any less valuable as part of a separate experienced group.

I guess it kind of depends on the purpose of WSO SS. If it's to network and give other professionals advice, create meet-ups, etc, I think it's somewhat counterproductive to arbitrarily exclude certain Certified Users and include others. Maybe it's something you guys want to start out small so you feel more comfortable revealing identities, I just think the group would benefit a lot from some of the members that are not on the original 15. I mean, for example, I am very far removed from the Street, as is Eddie and Midas...whereas most of the Certified Users are in the trenches.

I have no problem keeping this going as you guys want - just thought it was a bit redundant and would be great to get the private Certified User group active with a larger professional base. Nobody has ever made an effort to make that group active and I think it would serve as a better platform to build an offline WSO networking presence (and engage some of the less active, quality users).

I'm not sure how the other members feel, but that pretty much sums up my concerns. If it weren't for the fact that all mods can see these posts, I would have already posted up my LinkedIn account here as well maybe a short bio -- that is to say, I feel comfortable enough to reveal my identity to this small group of people, not so sure I could do the same with a larger group, YET. So I think that is a pretty good step in the right direction...start small, experiment, see how people react, and then maybe grow.

Patrick can you provide a list of the moderators? I think that would be fair disclosure. The intention here was not to slight the certified users butt rather to connect more closely with the users that I have built trust with. I think thats where this group is unique is that we all feel comfortable enough with each other.

My feelings exactly.

IlliniProgrammer--your the computer expert. What are our options/what kind of offsite options can you create and how would they operate?

So what's the deal people? Are we doing this on here, somewhere else?

Waiting on Patrick to tell us the list of moderators. Really looking forward to getting to know everyone better. Perhaps we all write up a short bio/resume with our interests/goals etc once we know we are secure.

I agree with Monty in that unless we can secure this so that it is just the people we feel comfortable actually revealing ourselves to, I would not do that here.

ok guys I registered for the site illini made.

I registered as well. Note the only language option was "British English" -- what's up with that!?! Luckily I rather enjoy British English, but wow!
