Accounting - Useful tips or tricks?

I'm taking Intro to Accounting right now and one thing that is a royal pain in the ass is calculating dates. I frequently miscount 1 month before or 1 month after what I'm supposed to count.. Does anyone have any useful tips or tricks with regards to calculating passage of time?
