Any Juniors Commuting from Suburbs to Midtown NYC?
Curious to hear if any IB associates (or equivalent level in other industries) are doing the commute to Midtown from the suburbs (Bronxville/Westchester/CT).
Easier to do now post-COVID? Worth it? I feel its much more acceptable and doable now but would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.
Ah, the classic suburb-to-Midtown hustle. Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon for finance professionals to commute from the 'burbs into the concrete jungle. Here's the scoop:
Bronxville/Westchester/CT: These areas are popular for those looking to escape the city's hustle after a long day of number-crunching. The Metro-North Railroad is the chariot of choice for many commuters from these regions.
Post-COVID Landscape: The pandemic has indeed shifted the norms. Remote work has become more accepted, and some firms are offering flexible arrangements. This could make the suburban lifestyle more feasible for finance pros.
The Trade-Off: You'll be weighing the cost savings and quality of life in the suburbs against the extra time and energy spent commuting. It's a personal decision, but many find the trade-off worth it.
Community Insights: On WSO, you'll find a mix of opinions. Some relish the quiet of the suburbs, while others find the commute draining. It's all about what works for your lifestyle and career goals.
If you're considering this move, remember to factor in the potential for late nights and early mornings in the office. The finance world can be unpredictable, and you'll want to ensure your commute doesn't add unnecessary stress. Swing by the forums for more personal stories and tips from those living the commute life.

Bump
Not as a junior, the closest suburb is probably still at least 40 mins away door to door one way, would make more sense if in a role where one was higher up
I know of an Associate who commutes via Metro-North to Midtown, after buying a home in Putnam County.
She complains about the commute, but her mortgage (~4BR/3BA) is less than most 1BR apartments in Manhattan.
It's certainly not ideal, but I guess it depends on what is important to you.
What's it like in Putnam County?
No clue... I think they have trees, but I'm not sure what else. LOL
