Anyone else feel "ashamed" to say they study/work in Finance?

I recently finished my first year of college studying finance and I often find myself hesitant to say I study finance and want to work in finance as many people seem to look down upon the finance industry. When people ask me what I'm studying I never say finance I just say business because I always get bad looks when saying finance. For example, at a party last semester, when a girl asked me what I'm studying and I said finance she told me oh so you're gonna assault me right now then (obviously this was an extreme example, but you get the point). I often get this a lot from liberal arts people which is very annoying because I don't look down upon them for their majors. Even some of my family members seemed disappointed in me when I chose finance over something that I could use my "bright mind to help the world". I guess I shouldn't think about this too much and move on but I'm just wondering if anyone else experiences this?

You can also use finance to help the world, e.g. micro-lending, non-profit finance, etc. Tell them to go read a book.

Never been ashamed to say I studied finance, and I've never heard of others having this issue. That girl sounds like a sperg though

I’m a fun guy. Obviously I love the game of basketball. I mean there’s more questions you have to ask me in order for me to tell you about myself. I'm not just gonna give you a whole spill... I mean, I don't even know where you're sitting at

There are significant issues with capitalism right now (ie. massive wealth inequality) and Wall Street is a clear target for many people. That being said capitalism has brought millions of people globally out of poverty and to the most peaceful time in human history. You can acknowledge to your friends and fam that there are issues while also pointing out most of the best tech advancements are funded by Wall Street and VCs.

Fun fact, the Robinhood app got its name because the founder's girlfriend at the time (now wife) would introduce him to her friends at parties, said he worked in finance, and everyone would groan. She then would clarify and go "no, no, he's like the Robin Hood of finance, building something for the average person." She apparently said it enough times that it stuck and became the name.

I’m not personally ashamed but always use “business” as well to avoid the pushback. When asked my specific concentration I would just say I still have to finish general courses that all business majors take. I said that until my final semester. Technically true, but also a bit deceptive.

I come from a pretty liberal part of the us but I never shy away from it. People who have a simplistic view of the financial industry aren't my target audience anyways.

To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.

No lmao. I do get a laugh out of the shit talk that IB gets tho from everyone who hit me with the ironic "oh im nightman I work in investment banking" comment as soon as i say what i do lol. I did get legitimate shit on by a super SJW guy years ago at a friend's party (I actually remember making a post about this) but my homie saw this guy was ruining my time and immediately had my back and kicked him out. Love that dude lol, gotta get fucked up w him soon

Dayman?

The peers who judge you come in two categories:

1. Rich kids who don’t need to enter finance and also couldn’t. They’re still pissed their older sis got that job at Goldman and their parents love big sis more for it, even though she doesn’t need the money as they struggle to get a 3.0 in gender studies. “But I’m my own person”

2. not rich peers who won’t ever make great money. You’d be amazed how many alums from great colleges make 40-100k at make work nonprofits up and down the eastern seaboard, fundraising and writing bogus grant proposals and white papers no one reads. They have to stampede to get River or Asia (think of some lame new age try hard name of a poor yuppie kid who drops acid at age 12) into charter school, and will resent you for working harder and making better life decisions than them.

Why do you have any concern for what stupid people think? Especially dumb liberal girls in college, they're quite literally a dime a dozen. Buy her a few drinks or take her to a half-decent club and magically all those concerns about finance will melt away.

I didn't use the word date for a reason. You don't. But assuming they're attractive, if you have moderate game and put in minimum effort you can hook up then move on. That's part of the college experience

No reason to care what someone who judges you based on your profession thinks. "Finance" is super vague and it's crazy someone would judge you based on that alone. I am from a super liberal part of the US and while people I know may wonder why I'm interested in finance or work as much as I do, nobody who I actually give a shit about/respect has ever taken issue with it.

Life's too short. If you're interested in finance and aren't doing harm to others, it doesn't matter what people think. If you're working for like a loan shark or putting people on the street in shady ways to make a buck, yeah that's shitty. But 99% of finance jobs are not that.

Ha as someone who lives in brooklyn and hangs with weirder and artsier crowds I do notice I avoid talking about work unless directly asked (though this is more a function of not wanting to talk or think about work when I'm out rather than being ashamed per se) That said I do enjoy the "wow I would've never guessed, you're nothing like the other ones" I elicit from people
