Anyone Else Struggle with Sleep?

Does anyone else struggle with getting enough sleep/falling asleep? I worry like crazy that I won't sleep well and thus won't be on my "game" the following day...of course this is a self fulfilling prophecy and leads to a shitty night. Any suggestions on how to get rid of a sleep insecurity?

You should drink more water.

The problem with melatonin is that you become dependent on it. I took it for a few days straight and couldn't fall asleep on my own when I decided to taper off.

Things that work for me:

  • It takes you 30-40 min to leave the house. It should take you the same amount of time to prepare for bed.
  • Turn off your computer. Put your phone on airplane mode and set the timer. Then throw away the phone.
  • Try to sleep at the same time every day. Even on weekends. If you go out, ignore the schedule. If you're staying in, go to sleep!
  • Turn off all lights. Never check what time it is. If you feel stressed, sit down with your legs crossed if you're flexible enough and breathe. Focus on your breath. Try falling asleep but don't think about sleeping, just have your eyes closed.
  • Sometimes reading books works for me (you'll need to keep the lights on for this). After 10 pages of reading, I get drowsy and fall asleep.

Bullets 1 and 2 made the biggest difference for me.

Had really bad chronic pain for years and years. Prevented me from sleeping fine and even after reducing pain levels 85%+, I still can’t sleep much continuously. Usually get a sharp sciatic pain at a few times. However still very grateful as I am much better. Definitely recommend investing in an awesome mattress. If you don’t love the first one you get, it’s easy enough to return it.

I knew you would comment this. 100% right tho

Also, how old are you? How tall are you? What is your squat, bench, and deadlift working weight?

Mid-to late 20s

Can squat like 100lbs

Bench like 45lbs on each side of the bar

Deadlife like 100lbs

Most of the main sleep hygiene rules have already been mentioned so I'll add a couple items that I've found have kept my sleep consistently amazing.

1- don't eat close to sleep. Try to keep a consistent gap between your dinner time and your bedtime. This also helps your sleep rhythm.

2- keep your room cool, and sleep on the cooler side. I keep my room around 17-19 Celsius (dunno the freedom units) and sleep with only a single sheet. The coolness keeps you asleep, being too warm can make you toss and turn and lower sleep quality. This also means I wake up feeling ravenous for breakkie.

3- have a consistent sound scape. I run a fan on a low setting year round even if it isn't pointed at me. This consistent sound scape again keeps sleep quality high.

4- always wake up at the same time, and not just wakeup but get up and get moving.

Hope you can find something that works for you brother - everyone deserves fantastic sleep. (also I've never tried any sleep meds)

I have the luxury of getting massive amounts of sleep. I need the recovery on some workout days.

Best advice I ever got is that if you’re struggling to fall asleep, the worst thing you can do is to keep trying. Nothing is worse than lying in bed stressing about falling asleep. I’ve found it enormously helpful to get up and do something when that happens to me. I’m a college student, so when I struggle to fall asleep, I’ll typically get out of bed and do some readings for class or something. Usually within 10-20 mins I’m ready to go to sleep.

Recently found out I've had severe obstructive sleep apnea all my life. I have a tiny airway turns out. I'm scheduled for double jaw MMA surgery in 7 months. Been sleeping with a CPAP in the meantime and it's changing my life. It's only been a month and I already feel like an entire different person.

Sorry for reviving this thread. Didn't see CBD mentioned here. Does anyone use it to sleep better? Are they really that effective?

I used to struggle with sleep for a while due to stress and anxiety from work. Since using CBD, I really sleep better. Fewer sleepless nights per week.

CBD doesn't knock me out like some sleep aids; instead, it gently eases my mind and body into a more relaxed state before bedtime. I don't know where you are from, but I get the CBD from Releaf, a private medical cannabis clinic here in the UK. I have monthly consultations and get 30 ml of CBD oil.
