Curious, how do art history exams and degrees work? Shouldn't they be more essay and coursework based rather than exams

I took an art history course on Picasso in Spain and the course was taught in Spanish and you had to answer exam questions in Spanish. The exams were mostly essay form where you analyzed certain paintings and described the period and focus of the art. Picasso had certain periods such as the blue period, cubism, and one of his most famous paintings - Guernica.
