Asian immigration into the U.S.

Brief article on The Economist blog about how China and India now contribute the most number of immigrants to the U.S., not Mexico. This is something I didn't know. The comments section is especially interesting as various people debate the pros and cons of the changing face of our country.

In the SF Bay Area, there is white flight due to parents worried that their kids can't compete with the Asians in school. In other areas of the country, there is growing resentment towards Asians for changing the culture of schools, for making things too competitive, and for taking away what they perceive to be their kids' spots at elite colleges. On the other hand, there are those who welcome increased Asian immigration due to the Asian work ethic and emphasis on stable family structures.

Is there really white flight? I've never heard an upper-middle class or upper-class white complain about asians (Aside from old people). For the most part, wealthier asians and whites are completely integrated in our generation.

Likewise, wealthy whites are just as competitive as asians when it comes to their kids schooling, they just focus on different things (e.g. squash instead of violin/piano).

I definitely have... more so making fun of it than complaining though

Things like kids who were accepted to UPenn and going somewhere else considered less prestigious on this board saying "I didn't really want to go to Penn, too many Asians there"

As long as they're doing it legally, and not gaming the system through immigration law loopholes that's fine by me even though I believe that a countries ethnic/racial population should be a minimum of 60% of the whole nation's population(also I understand that the phrase is considered slightly racist or racist but this applies to all countries).

So we should be 60% native american? Better start force breeding them...

I'm not trying to say that immigrants are a bad thing but I think it should be controlled towards the country's benefit rather than the immigrant's benefit as for the native american thing. Sure, why not but that would mean history taking a whole different course altogether not to mention that it could have been anyone to colonize North America. I know what I said earlier is pretty flawed but you can definitely contribute with your own opinion on immigrants and immigration in general.

Damm. I guess my knowledge of U.S. history is way off! I could've sworn that native americans were here long before the Europeans.

Also, pretty much all whites in the U.S. are an amalgam of various European ethnic groups. You are using an extremely narrow definition of "ethnic/racial" since you are implying that whites are somehow not an ethnic group.

I do think there are too many immigrants entering the US. Too many anchor babies too which shouldn't be allowed. I'm also worried that the labor force would continue to get too competitive especially with the Indians and Chinese continuing to pour into this country.

The problem is that East Asian's squinty eyes scare me. I mean how do they see? Or drive? And Indians just smell like curry. Do we want a bunch of fucked up driving curry smelling 'mericans around here with my true blooded native Irish catholic kids? And they're all too hardworking and smarts. I don't want them to take my kids space at Harvard. I just don't want them here.

We as a country are better than any other country in integrating immigrants into our country. Do they change the face of who we are? Yes. And it has for the past 200 years. And it made us better. When my ancestors first started coming here people were scared because papists were going to change the fabric of waspy America and not only would it be the end of America as they knew it, it was the downfall of all the Cabots held dear. And when the jews, Italians, eastern euros and everyone else came we as a country took them into our fold and made ourselves collectively better. I am all for the self selected people who immigrate because the act of getting here shows determination and grit compared to just sitting on your ass in Trashassiskstan. Will the US be darker soon and does that scare people? Yes. Just like people were scared when a bunch of Catholics or Jews came.

I didn't want to comment but the amount of racism and stupidity in NickW1 post is literally astonishing . Lowly races? Wtf are you a West Virginian skinhead? Did you really call the most marginalized races in the country treated like royalty? Is that a joke? The poorest most victimized race (African americans) are treated like royalty? In what sense? How are we to learn from Japan and be 99% homogenous? Are we to forcefully mix or are you advocating some sort of racial engineering that would surely result in Genocide? Was your post just written to troll anyone with any sort of intelligence? So many questions....
