Automobile Longevity
I have an American SUV from 2003 pushing 150k miles. Presuming regular quarterly maintenance, how long should a typical automobile last? I went on various websites with cars for sale and see that some of the highest mileage autos are around the 200k mark.
I like not having a car payment, cheap insurance, cheap registration, and simple DIY maintenance without all the computerized crap.
And yes, I'm a niggardly tightwad financier like my bro Buffett!
Depends on the vehicle make and model. I know two people who both drove 2002 Jetta TDI's. One blew up at 340k miles while the other is still going at 260k miles. I would say on average, most vehicles start being more of a hassle around the 210k range.
.
It's a Ford Explorer.
Each vehicle is on a case by case basis, but I agree around the 200k mark your vehicle will start to require more maintenance and repairs. The money you pour into keeping your car running might be the same as leasing/financing a new car without the hassle of bringing it into the shop every so often.
