Back office and front office recruiting
Hey, I am exploring opportunities in the back office at bulge brackets as a fall back (better than nothing).
Do banks not care about target university when it comes to back office recruiting?
I have been looking at people profiles and talking to people and some of them come from unranked universities.
(Note I am not saying that all people in the back office went to bad universities. Some went to top very top universities. ).
But for something like Operations, audit, operations risk etc... would they not give university much of a weighting?
Back office recruiting dont put much emphaisis on your school. You actually can get interviews from just online applications. Certainly they will not ignore it completely. If you go to a really shitty college, they will not consider you.
They might if you have a good major and are well rounded person it seems from what I have seen.
I actually got my operations offer from applying online, so that's definitely correct. In general, for NYC ops, most people seemed to come from a handful of NY Schools (e.g. Rutgers, Buffalo, Stonybrook). It's definitely more regional at most firms (although not all - GS ops used to have nationwide).
A lot of people in Operations in JP Morgan come from Bournemouth university who did stuff like sports management etc... I suppose it is no surprise because they have outsourced some of their operations to Bournemouth.
