Banking work culture - ice cold!

New to banking. Is everyone all about work and client meetings? Tried to have side conversations with coworkers to get to know them and banking culture, but nobody seems to care to get to know more about each other. My previous life in different corporate, we were all always asking about each other’s lives and trying to get to know one another. Thank you.

You can’t force it - it may come over time.

Yeah. People that try to force it come of as brown nosing weasels. Give it time, every bank, every department and every group has its own culture.

It's likely due to covid and WFH.

One of the main plusses of banking is actually the bonds formed. Think of it like being kidnapped with 3 other strangers. Over the course of a year or 2 you get to know them pretty well. Kind of like a fraternity pledge process.

I think this is fairly accurate.

Hmm. Honestly, this hasn't been my experience. Sure, when things are busy people can get stressed out and become less conversational. But for the most part I've found that people are friendly and over time you get to know more about their personal lives. Not sure where you live, but if you're working from home right now perhaps that is part of the issue. It may take longer for people to warm up to you when they're trying to get to know you via Zoom

Being in the office makes a big difference. I was friends with analysts, associates, and even some of my MDs before this happened and we kept the friendly non-work dialogue going since the start of WFH.
