Controversial

I’m assuming it is a Hollywood movie with favorable press and thus it’s got some communist dribble in it. Only go if she is willing to see sound of freedom or binge rambo over a weekend.

Only two sources I trust, Glenn Beck and singing woodland creatures.

Fr, like who tf cares ? The only reason any guy is watching that movie is to see Margot Robbie. I could care less about the wokeism….

As mentioned above, grow a pair, touch grass lmao

Here we go. You guys don’t get tired of the constant outrage over everything? It’s a fucking movie about dolls made specifically to sell additional dolls. Get a grip on yourself

Might be a hot take here, but people who spend their time bitching over movies about dolls and mermaids being “woke” are way bigger losers than people who enjoy said movies about dolls and mermaids.

This hyper backlash against “wokism” is one of the dumbest and most obnoxious trends of the year in my opinion. Sound of Freedom was a solid C-. No that doesn’t make me a ped0 for thinking that. It was just a mediocre movie that would’ve bombed at the box office or been straight to DVD pre-Qanon / MAGA.

Don’t get me wrong, whiny liberals have always been annoying but the emergence of the fragile conservative is potentially more brutal.

In addition I find that consuming media with different views from your own is at odds with the philosophy of “strong opinions, loosely held”. This sort of myopia (that exists on both sides of the political spectrum) only serves to further divide the country on issues that frankly do not matter nearly as much as something like suicide rate

No comment on Barbie since I haven't seen, but Wokism is arguably the most corrosive thing in Western civilization presently. It inspires racial hatred and division, it's censorious, it perpetuates lies about history and lies about the nature of man, it turns man against woman, people against their own bodies, citizens against their country. Wokism turns good into evil and evil into good. It turns morally depraved people into sanctimonious jerks. It's judgmental. It's prideful. It makes everyone miserable, especially its most ardent adherents. Not only is the pushback not currently sufficient, society needs to quadruple its efforts to pushback against Wokism.

The immensely amusing thing is everything you said about "wokism" (which sounds more like a religion that worships woks than an ideology) can be applied to abrahamic religion, which conservatives illogically follow to a fault.

Imagine being worked up about a movie on Barbies

Seriously. People on here need to touch grass. Embarrassing to think that grown men with successful careers are seething over a funny movie geared towards kids

- One of the largest box office openings in a long time
- Mattel stock pushed up due to this
- Consumers dressing up in pink, wrapping their cars in pink, showing up in groups all dressed up in pink, walking across town in pink, ..
- All of social media talks about it, across all touch points and digital channels, memes and challenges are being created
- London (and other cities) are painted pink all over, bridges, towers, bars, street lights, etc.. all in pink

If anything, this was one of the best GTM moves ever. Management teams will talk about this for years to come.
In times where writers/actors/industry professionals are on strike, it is important to show what an impact the world of media/entertainment has on humans around the world.

It is also wrong to assume that only girls play with Barbie dolls or dolls in general. Boys do this also, and there is nothing wrong with it? When you are a little kid and you/your siblings sit down to play with dolls, I would say this is completely normal. Whoever has been around kids will quickly realize that they don't have any agendas or political views when it comes to toys - they just want to share time/a hobby with other kids.

The only message I've taken away from the anecdotes I've seen is that a female-led society can only exist in a make believe toy land lol

Your first mistake was letting GF choose the movie. It's a film about Barbie, it was obvious the route they were going to take it when they carefully made sure to seed nostalgia bait across socials while all their critic takes were about how it's a champion of feminism. CD's review was amusing at least.

I think it’s just sad because Oppenheimer is an objectively better and more important film and Barbie is beating it in terms of sales. Not saying both movies can’t be fine but it is alarming to see what the masses care about more. Haven’t seen Barbie but sure they will just tell a story about how dumb, stupid, and useless men are so I’ll pass.

It's an aside, but the marketing campaign around it has been incredible - top tier really, and exceeding the budget of the movie itself. You see people all over the place dressed in pink, pop-up cafes, influencers, etc. Whatever the actual content of the movie, the hype has been real.

Equally fascinating given that only what, a few years ago Barbie was being canceled for promoting an unattainable figure, bad gender roles, etc.

It's rated R, it was never going to have remotely comparable mass appeal from a marketing perspective. No doubt it's the better film.

I wouldn't blame the masses on this one. The marketing didn't hint at all about the messaging they were going to soak this thing in and made it seem like it'd be just a fun family movie. Parents have been exhausted by Disney turning everything into a soap box so are probably taking their daughters to this and coming away quite dissapointed, have heard a couple of such anecdotes including one where a parent demanded and got a refund.

Right. It sounds like the marketing is misleading, at best, or possibly outright fraudulent.

opppenheimer is a 3 hour long r-rated movie that's mostly just a bunch of dudes talking... obviously barbie is going to sell more tickets

I thought the producers were fairly smart. They left it pretty ambiguous and hedged in whether they were being ironic or not. So, if the agenda succeeds, they'll say they did it on purpose; if the agenda fails and all they get is big backlash by conservatives, they'll say they were being ironic/ sarcastic and so the butthurt conservatives look like fools for being butthurt over satire.

So, if it's satire, the Barbie producers are the conservatives...
