Best TV shows to watch
I've already seen Billions (incredible), Breaking Bad, GOT, Peaky Blinders (arguably best show on Netflix), the basic shows, etc. Succession was a no go for me. Too slow and just didn't think it was great acting. Any thoughts on new shows to watch?
I personally don't see the appeal of Succession either - watched it all and don't understand the hype.
I watched the first season and didn't like it at all. Tons of reviews say that it has since picked up, so I guess I need to give it another shot?
I was in the same boat after season 1. Acting wasn't great and didn't like any of the characters. I stuck with it for season 2 and it ended up being a really great season. If you have the time, would recommend giving it a second chance.
I've never been the type to labor through something just because "it gets better"
Season 2 was very good. 88% on Metacritic (because RottenTomatoes sucks now) which made it one of the top rated shows in 2019. The characters start to settle in, the interpersonal dynamics heat up and the story line is far more cohesive than the previous season.
I maintain that Billions blows. Way too basic-cable corny, like Suits.
Things you should try out:
"The Crown" on Netflix
"You" on Netflix
"Fleabag" on Amazon
"Chernobyl" on HBO
"The Morning Show" on Apple TV+
And if you haven't watched them, Mad Men, The Sopranos, The Wire, and The West Wing are all classics.
I agree with your Billions comment. It definitely is super corny but also just a cool show. Suits was the best show ever for the first few seasons and then went super downhill which was upsetting
Lmao... no.
Fleabag really surprised me, in a good way. My wife got me to watch and it just gets funnier each episode.
Surprised to see a recommendation of "You" mixed with The Crown, Fleabag and Chernobyl (plus the classics). That show is absolute trash imo. Other than that, flawless list
Anyway, I would also recommend "Spy", on Netflix. It's not mind-blowing, but it's good enough and I would say it has an interesting/different angle into the ME conflict. Plus it's very short, so not a big commitment
I thought it was entertaining. Hardly high-minded, but my fiancee got me into it and I stayed invested throughout. I'll give you that it doesn't really belong in the above list, but I liked it.
Would add “band of brothers” in the mix
Great call. Definitely a miss on my list.
If you want sate-of-the-art TV shows (near or even above of great films) see: Twin Peaks The leftovers Mad Men An Honorable Woman Homeland The Crown (especially s3)
Money Heist on Netflix is a good show. Prison Break is decent up until S4. Suits is good for the first few seasons.
I just couldn't get into the voiceover of Money Heist. It looked really interesting though.
The show, Bojack Horseman, grows on you, though the Todd character gets annoying sometimes. The Witcher is off to a good start. Punisher is good too.
BH was fun the first seasons, the last are quite annoying and redundant.
Someone please tell me WTF was so good about Chernobyl. I found it every bit as boring, depressing and forgettable as one might expect of a long miniseries about the death of a town by radiation.
To be fair, I half-slept through each episode but that also kind of supports the point.
I'm a fan of history, good acting, and the sense of dread the series really nailed. I felt anxious every episode.
Gotcha. Thanks. Jared Harris is a hell of an actor, I'll say that much.
Spot on. Any show/book/movie that can bring out a real feeling of dread/despair is A fucking plus.
Sherlock is pretty good
Ah I forgot that one. It got a bit ridiculous in later seasons, but I agree.
Gonna keep this to shows that premiered in 2019
Comedy: Russian Doll (nflx), The Righteous Gemstones (hbo), Sex Education (nflx) Action: Umbrella Academy (nflx), The Boys (amzn) - both based on comics FYI Drama: I haven't watched Chernobyl (hbo). Watchmen (hbo) or When They See Us (nflx) yet but I hear they are outstanding
Mad Men Sneaky Pete Halt and Catch Fire Sopranos Better Call Saul
Entourage Ozark Narcos / Narcos Mexico
I liked Ozark too, excited for the next season
+1 - can't wait for new Ozark, great show.
Keeping it to 2019:
Off the cuff -- Fleabag is the most critically acclaimed series that has been out in a long while. Chernobyl is a great Sunday night watch. Silicon Valley never recovered after TJ Miller left. I just can't seem to give a fuck about The Watchmen.
The Americans on Amazon.
Power
Power is the greatest show on TV. Absolutely unpredictable, but still makes you invested in every character on the show.
6 seasons and not once has my interest ever waned.
How is it possible for someone to consider Peaky Blinders possibly the best show on Netflix (which it is) and think Billions is incredible at the same time? Billions is the Suits of "finance", which is not a compliment.
It's difficult to delve into recommendations as you haven't specified whether you're looking for just recent/ongoing shows or classic ones as well. If the former, then my small selection (to avoid a barrage of suggestions - all on Netflix):
Drama: Ozark, Mindhunter and Luther Comedy: The Kominshy Method edit No genre: Master of None
Regardless of time though, and on top of the classics already mentioned, there are 3 shows that I would recommend to anyone and that might get overlooked sometimes: Parks and Recreation, Eastbound and Down, and Sherlock.
I didn't watch a lot of Suits but doesn't Billions have a lot more plot twists kind of like the crime shows? Feel like its more comparable to NCIS/Law & Order in terms of how the stories play out.
The comparison is not based on the plot (although some parallels can be drawn, especially on how main character-centric it is (or couple of characters)), but rather on the absolute fucking lack of a plausible dialogue. People just don't talk like that, period. There's no substance, no character development, no emotions or accountability beyond the most basic levels. I'm not saying they can't be entertaining shows (I watched the first few seasons of Suits myself, and it's frustrating because they had a good starting premise), but it's frustrating to see these shows rated among the best in TV.
If you want a good example of what Suits should aspire to be, then watch Boston Legal. Also an "unrealistic" lawyer show, but immensely deeper, tackling real issues with real characters.
As for Billions, you seem to work for a hedge fund - let us know if your days are as cool and if your PM changes the world twice every week.
Parks & Recreations is excellent as it keeps you smiling through most of the episodes. Community is also a good one and one should not forget The office which is pretty hilarious.
The last season of Mindhunter was really enjoyable (less prisons, more real investigation & stuff like Zodiac from the same director!)
Parks & Rec will always be a very binary show. While I don't think anyone can truly dislike it, it'll be a huge hit with some and probably forgettable for others. For me, it's pure genius and while it's difficult to rate it against shows like Breaking Bad and Sherlock due to its completely different genre, I would never put together a top 3 or 5 of my favorite shows without including it. Community is also very good, you're completely right. I eventually stopped watching, but the first 2/3 seasons at least are pure gold
Midnhunter is spectacular. I agree that season 2 transported it to an ever higher level and I'm excited to see what's coming next.
The last season of Mindhunter ended so poorly
Actually, I forgot Master of None in my previous post. I'll edit, but I think it's worth a separate mention - it's phenomenal (even if you don't like Aziz as a stand up comedian, like me)
The season two with Alessandra Mastronardi is really good ! All the italian stuff was something I didn't expect ("allora!") but the whole season was warmehearted - except the final episode which was overplayed imo...
Wathcmen is garbage. Don't bother. Rewatching The Sapranos
Watchmen was really well done. Interesting, detailed storylines stringing you along until the end when it all converges. Might not be for everyone, but if you get through episode three you won't stop.
Other recs from some people are shit. Everything on this list is bingeable.
DARK is one of my favorite shows of all time. The cinematography is amazing and is paired with the beautifully remote outskirts of Berlin; the writing is wicked and the story will mindfuck you.
Very very good list
DARK was SOMETHING, the whole plot is well manoeuvred and the script...damn...three different eras and the entanglement of it is well transcripted (one could said flawless ) and the actors of same characters (but different timeline) are really physically similar, it is astonishing.
Yep. Honestly amazing writing (especially in S1). Was hesitant about S2 but then found myself thoroughly pleased. They're wrapping the series up with S3 (writers said the ending was planned from the beginning, which I very look forward to wrapping my head around).
I call it Stranger Things For Adults.
+1 Narco's and The Boys.
The boys has some of the funniest scenes in TV. The fucking dolphin
I would recommend Black Mirror - its more that each episode explores a different dystopian/tech plagued future that a chronological tv series but it definitely lets you explore and question the future of technology
The Boys, The Expanse, The Mandalorian
Curb Your Enthusiasm! Can't believe no one's said it yet. Funniest show on television and there's a new season coming out soon. Larry David makes me cackle like a little kid whenever I watch this show.
Archer
Master of None, Glow (season 1 is a but of a trudge), Ms Maisel, Brooklyn 99, The Good Place, Maniac, Atlanta
Was a bit sceptical at first of Apple TV+ thinking that the shows were more about having A-list actors rather than actual substance, but I binge watched “The Morning Show” and “See” over the holidays and loved them both. Albeit two completely different genres, but both worth the watch and only a season each so easy to binge!
Didn't see these mentioned.
Shameless,
Don't F#$k with Cats East Bound and Down, if you are stoned and have nothing better to do.
Power and Homeland were mentioned and I recommend them.
Hannibal (older show but recently got into it and it's great. If you're into psycho-thrillers, this is your jam)
Raising Dion (they only have 1 season so far but it's a pretty good show. Trying to be Stranger Things-y but still worth watching)
Street Food (great for seeing awesome food videos and being a bit more far removed from the restaurant scene. A must if you plan to hit up any of their destinations for holiday)
Black Monday (Don Cheadle being a coked up Wall Street trader in the 80s. Similar style to the Wolf of Wall Street but funnier IMO)
Ozark (very cool thriller-ish series)
How to get away with murder (well known, some may say overrated but still a solid show IMO)
Atypical is a really good one not mentioned yet. Just binged the entire three seasons.
Bodyguard Homeland You Dirty John Unbelievable Schitts Creek
Going to start Master of None.
The Witcher if you're looking for a similar show to Game of Thrones.
Death note, literally the best shit I've ever seen
This anime is pretty lit a great ground is the intellectual battle between L and light but the ending deceived me a lot. Other Manga animes are pretty insane: Attack on titans Hunter x hunter Code geass Full metal alchemist...
Hard second to Attack on Titan / Code Geass / FMA but I couldn't for the life of me get into HunterxHunter
Sopranos is the greatest show ever created
Black mirror
Ozark
Gotham
The Witcher
You
Drugs Inc
Homeland
Shark Tank
Explained
Rick and Morty
Power
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Boardwalk Empire
Suits Vikings
The Wire
It will change your life
WestWorld
I started watching StartUp on Netflix and think its pretty good. Not what I thought it would be at all.
For those with HBO, The Young Pope was pretty good, like the Catholic House of Cards. Pretty fucked up though.
