I'm doing work, reading WSO and have the debate on in the background while I flip to History Channel off and on...
My thoughts are that Joe Biden is ridiculously charismatic. I can't help but like him even though I can't stand the Obama administration. I hate Paul Ryan's hair. Those are my deep thoughts so far.
Surprisingly, Biden is kicking Ryan's ass so far.
Biden is kicking ass.
Biden needs to work on his diction.
t-t-t-t'day junior

Biden keeps interrupting Ryan. It's super annoying.
I don't recall Romney interrupting Obama. I recall Romney interrupting the moderator because the moderator wouldn't let him talk. The math showed this as Obama had 5-6 minutes more speaking time.
Biden: Vote for me, I'll raise your social security benefits.
Old/dumb people: YAY
Wealthy/smart people: (facepalm) Higher taxes and higher debt.
You really do have to be an idiot to vote Democrat.
Yup.
.
.
This looks like Biden and the moderator vs. Ryan. The moderator hasn't challenged Biden once.
The moderator is clearly after Ryan. She's asking him much tougher questions and is not stopping Biden's ridiculous rude interruptions.
In terms of content, I think Biden is winning, but his jackass demeanor and interruptions are really making him look bad. He's overcompensating for his boss' ass whooping last week.
I agree. Biden's demeanor is outshining his content. Comes off like an immature high schooler.
Respect for Biden. If Obama loses this election he can blame himself, not Biden. I think this is about a draw so far.
I think the moderator is sorta fair, so far. She nailed Biden in the beginning and not pushing Ryan for details. Not sure why Biden can't be professional.
Calling Netanyahu "bibi" all the time is annoying.
I'm sure Biden is making the base happy, but not sure if someone who is moderate will really be into his mantra level attacks. Ryan is pretty calm, on point and just drives home his message. Biden is going ape shit at times.
You're right. Romney interrupted the moderator. I guess Joe is just kicking it up a notch.
Ryan needs to come off as less of a robot if he wants to win. This makes me think he has zero chance of ever becoming President, whether or not Romney wins this year. He's having the John Kerry problem right now.
Seriously, how are those Republicans planning to decrease your nation's debt? It's just ridiculous..
Btw, I like those debates here in the US. It's pretty lame back home but here they are pretty entertaining. Is anyone watching the debate on Bloomberg's page? The Live Blog is pretty cool b/c there's so much to correct for the Bloomberg writers.. :D
From an outward perspective, Biden seems to be much more knowledgable than Ryan imho. That's just my impression though.
Btw2, how long is this debate going?
Foreigners always think that the Democrat wins because they agree with them on content. WSO last week had a dozen or so non-Americans calling Obama the winner.
Last week Romney kicked Obama's ass, no doubt about it.
Oh I love how the 7.8% unemployment came out. Hahahha.
Biden looks like such a sleaze ball. Also the moderator is a joke.
The fact that Obama was invited to her wedding is just ridiculous

I don't know, I think this moderator is pretty fair. She just pressed Biden on the war. She needs to be hitting these issues. I mean I love RR, but if he is going to win this election he is going to have to hit these details.
Biden and Obama are on different ends of the spectrum. Biden is way to amp'd up, Obama was too docile.
Sad, I think Biden is doing a decent job, if he just calmed down and was more diplomatic. He is pulling the old man yelling routine.
While I agree the moderator probably likes and supports Obama, she strikes me as a professional and can put her personal feelings aside.
.
Ryan is a rising star, win/lose/draw on this election. Dude is keeping his calm while Biden is just popping off.
I really thought Biden would hit Ryan more with the 47% comment, etc. Really just a small hit and then off to another topic. What is going on?
Oh no, the abortion question.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Handled very well by Paul Ryan.
Maybe. I mean Ryan was pretty insistent on the no cuts below 54 or whatever. I wonder what scares old people in Florida more. Untouched benefits that become insolvent or fixing a system and not touching their benefits.
People are selfish. Look at unions. Benefit older works at the expense of younger workers. I can see old people saying FU to younger people haha.
Why is everyone whispering during the abortion issue. haha
Probably the truest thing you will read in the next few days about all of this.
This debate fucking sucks. Bring Romney and Obama back in for round 2 already.
Why is everyone whispering. WTF haha.
Attack, Blame and Defame.
Hahahhaha
And thank you Ryan for not whispering.
Oh man, Ryan is walking down memory lane. Nice finish.
Leaders run to problems to fix problems.
Bang, Bam, Boommmmmm
.
Watching these two, and thinking about the folks they are trying to win over, and how much power these politicians now possess, I am really beginning to warm to Peter Theil's musing that "I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible."
Is Biden really bitching to the moderator hahaha
He is still whispering!
So I say this was an even debate. I personally think Ryan came off better with undecided votes, but that was because Biden was a little too nutty.
I think the moderator was pretty fair.
Somebody email Ryan a link to Indochino.
Awesome insight I just read: "Ryan thinks this is a debate—Joe understands it is a political show."
If you're Democratic: Biden is teaching this boy a lesson! If you're Republican: Let the man speak! If you're independent: Who's this douchebag who won't let the opposition get a decent word in?
Overall I'd say Democrats are happy with Biden's overcompensation, but in the long run I think this debate may have brought over some more swing voters or independents to the Romney campaign.
Yeah, I think Biden's job was to appease the base and let Obama drive home the win. Biden was smiling all the time, sneering, kind of silly at times. Hit the points the base wants, but not sure if moderates or undecided voters would be turned on by the way he acted.
CNBC tweeted its instant poll--56% Ryan, 36% Biden, 8% neither.
CNBC is showing clip after clip of Biden laughing. Like WTF is up with that.
I'm not a fan of CNBC's obvious support for the left.
I'm watching Kudlow, but yeah, way too much left leaning crap on here.
I still love how the moderator brought up that crap unemployment rate. 7.8%. LOL
.
Why did Ryan have so much hair gel in?
Yeah, I think it was last weeks Businessweek and they examined these undecided voters. Most are clueless.
boring debate.
Could someone go on Reddit and tell me the consensus? The site makes me too sick to go on.
Dull debate. Biden was laughing cause that is his style. The long-winded answer on relegion/abortion Ryan gave was not nesscary, Mitt is a mormon already enuff said.
Overall it was a draw. A few thoughts.
I thought Ryan did well on taxes, medicare, government spending, but he was weak on afghanistan and the auto bailout. He was not clear on the timeline for afghan withdrawal and left open the dangerous notion that U.S. troops should be at harm's risk in the most dangerous parts of the country. On the auto bailout, he should have said that Obama did let GM go through a managed bankruptcy, which is precisely what Romney advocated. Obama however let the labor unions get preferential treatment.
Biden did well on substance, especially on iran and afghanistan. He is correct that the sanctions have crippled Iran and that they're far from making viable nuclear weapons. His assertion that Obama and Netanyahu talk constantly and are buddies was laughable however. On Libya he seemed less steadfast-totally understandable given the administration's coverup of what really happened.
On style, Biden made an ass of himself. I have never seen a presidential or vp candidate interrupt his rival so often. His facial expressions and tone were downright condescending and bizarre. No idea if this was intentional strategy on his part, but it definitely did pump up the democratic base as well as Obama's surrogates at MSNBC.
Verdict: it was an engaging substantive debate but won't change the trajectory of the race.
The Fox News debate panel with Frank Luntz was fantastic today. They had 26 undecided Ohio voters, about 2/3 voted Obama, 1/3 McCain. The small majority thought Biden won but 0 of the 26 were swayed one way or the other on voting Obama or Romney.
Charles Krauthammer got it exactly right: if you read the transcript the debate was a tie. If you listened on the radio Biden won. If you saw it on TV Ryan won. His conclusion is absolutely correct: this debate will not move the needle either way.
FYI, CNN instant poll had Ryan 48, Biden 44.
.
Yeah, that is why I avoid it. The lack of intelligence of the proletariat is sad. I've gotten into arguments on a bunch of sites over the years and always find the level of intelligence and power of arguments to be the best on this site. Reddit is simply a joke where simple minds go to make themselves feel smart.
I freely admit Biden did a good job of hitting his points and not being passive. Anyone that thinks laughing, smiling and sneering all the time during a national, Presidential level debate, is simply not informed or no engaged in a real discussion.
Biden could have gotten his message through without his facial expressions. I don't even want to call it disrespect since I think Biden is a rather nice guy and probably liked Ryan. I just think Biden is a little nutty and it showed through during this debate.
Not sure why Obama and Biden think this is a joke. Regardless of who wins, someone has a serious job in front of them.
And this is coming from a person who really doesn't care. Most of my friends are people struggling to find work, just out of the military, high school degree at best. I don't care about food prices increase, gas prices increasing, token increases on the people who pay the majority of taxes. I think Romney is 100% about the economy and will do what it takes to get it going. I think Obama sees the economy as a distraction and a bother.
4 more years of Obama will simply make me sick, not broke. Can't say the same about my friends and the others who sadly vote for Obama while he fucks them over.
Yeah, most of my friends growing up.
And I have no illusions on the power of the Presidency. But they have a big influence, whether it be from championing less regulations, lower taxes, a balanced budget, whatever. Romney is one dimensional to me and that is all I want. A robot focused on the economy and nothing else.
Ryan needs to get laid
And I've been looking all over for Bieber tickets
Now I know who's been scalping them
I think that Biden would have won on substance, but made an ass of himself with the constant laughing and interruptions, so it's a draw.
