BlackBerry Classic - Back to the roots

Guys,

what do you think of the new BlackBerry classic?
It's basically an improved Bold and is obviously aimed for business users.
I'm not a big iPhone fan anymore and wonder whether this might be a nice workphone..

Thoughts?

Too little, too late.

It's all BYOD these days.

My bank has abandoned blackberries. We've turned them in and we just use apps (Good) and/or office-provided iPhone 6's. Blackberry support is being phased out and they aren't supporting the Blackberry OS.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.

I've used Blackberries all my life. Everything from the scroll wheel on the side, the track ball, the touch pad, and finally the z10 that is all touch screen. I was really happy with every Blackberry pre-2012. Google no longer supports Blackberry, so the most basic of apps (like Google Maps) can't be used and Blackberry Maps is the absolute worst. In order to navigate around London, I would have to rely on a Barclays bike map, and use a compass app to make sure I was travelling in the correct direction. Horrid.

I advise you to stay away unless you truly ONLY use your phone for texting, email and phone calls. For that, the phone is brilliant. But, if you use your phone for anything more, stay away.

Yah, they are relegated to maybe a niche market of people who absolutely love BB. With the Corp environment open to droid and Apple, BB loses its main captive audience.

I'll always want a keyboard for work. Smashing out an email on touch screen is just too high risk.

I actually think this is a very smart move. To me, the dumbest thing BBRY can do is continue to try and compete with AAPL/GOOG in the high end touch screen device world. This phone is exactly what alot of people 50-90 like and they don't use any apps.

There also may be a market for corp users who prefer having 2 devices. The BBRY is perfect for work email only and your fancy android for everything else in life. I used the good app for awhile and it was absolutely terrible. While I liked having one device only, it was a struggle often.

I think BBRY will be happy if by 2020 they have .1% of the global market share. That's 6.8 million devices globally by my quick calc.

Like many here I had my days using a blackberry and during that period it was 99% email for me. It is a shame they didn't take Apple and such seriously before it got too late because they still have the best encryption system for its email.

Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

I pre-ordered it and am hoping that it will be as good as i hope it will be.

Just wanted to post an update, as I received the phone meanwhile and played around with it quite a bit. I have to say that I like the idea. However, RIM doesn't seem to be able to get a decent OS working, as BB10 really isn't anything special. The keyboard is awesome obviously, but besides Mail, texting etc you can't really do much with it and that's exactly where it loses against my iPhone 6.

Will try to for sure. As for Amazon Apps, I only downloaded Spotify thus far and it works fine and looks "normal" (there was a warning when starting it for the first time, that Amazon Apps may look weird and that you would need to switch to the Android view mode). The only thing that bothers me thus far, is that I can't seem to find Uber anywhere, but I just checked really quickly earlier today. Will look into it a bit more, because I am sure that you can get Uber for Android.

I saw that, too. However when trying to download it still tells me sth like "software not available for this version of the device". If anyone managed to do it, please let me know.

So for those of us who have a choice between the Iphone 6 and Blackberry Classic for a work phone, what would you recommend? I can forsee a future where I buy this phone and carry it for work (set it up BYOD) and continue with my Nexus 5 for everything else. I'm currently hostile to the idea of a combined work/personal phone

IMO, if you have a work phone choice I would choose the BB. Great for email, simple and light. Unfortunately, I know of a lot of places that have just ditched the BB altogether.

Wish RIM had done this move years ago. And forget the stupid BB OS. Just make a BB and have it run android. Zero reason why they even try with another OS.

Agreed. Not sure why this hasn't crossed anyone's mind over at RIM ...

Found a way to get SNAP on the BB which allows to install apps from the Google Play Store. I got Uber that way, however thus far I haven't tested it.

See here for an explanation:
