BofA or BaML?
Stupid question but I’ve noticed individuals in IBD have either the BofA main company on their LinkedIn or the BaML page (blue logo). Technically the BaML page is now inactive but people still seem to use that one for their IB roles so is there an industry standard or does it not really matter for the purpose of headhunters/networking?
Del
Yes my understanding is Baml became BofA securities so people just put BofA on linkedin now but like 30-40% of the people in IB still have the old Baml page
Bofa Deez Nuts
Yes?
Username checks out. rofl
Well there are still a lot of people from Merrill that take pride in that brand. It’s a legacy prestige thing. When I worked there, a bunch of people held on to their ML only emails. I’m sure it’s a bit different now, but there were some people who actually hated BoA and just fell short of saying as much.
You have to remember that BoA was an amalgamation of a bunch of M&A of commercial banks and had largely a middle-market IB presence before the ML acquisition. In today’s time, it’d be like if Morgan Stanley got acquired by Wells Fargo.
What about banc of America? How does that brand fit in the picture
Banc of America Securities (1998–2008) - Wikipedia
"Banc of America Securities LLC (BAS), was the investment banking subsidiary of Bank of America until it was merged with Merrill Lynch after that firm's acquisition in 2008 to become Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Headquartered in New York City, the company competed in both the domestic and international equity and investment banking markets."
Makes perfect sense — are new analysts just going to get BoA regular email addresses now? Also sorry for getting caught up in the minutia but I was wondering how much the LinkedIn page you have on your profile matters for headhunters/networking?
yeah @bofa.com
Which is funny bcs those morons should realize theyd be unemployed and their “prestige” would be up there with Lehman brothers if bofa didnt throw them a liferaft in 08
merril lynch ruined bofas clean sheets.
They rebranded and discontinued the Merrill name in late 2019 (Except for Merrill Wealth). My understanding is they wanted disassociate from the Merrill brand and its history. A lot of people who started for they switched have kept the "BofA Merrill Lynch" name on their linkedin (myself included). Our old "baml" emails just forward to the newer "bofa" addresses. If you go on brokercheck, you'll see that anyone who started at BofA before 2019 will have switched firms from BofA Merrilll to BofA Securities (or BofAss as many of us called at during the change)
Thanks for the context!
Also the page that redirects from Baml is now “BofA Business” which nobody uses
It'll be Baml as long as I have breath in my lungs
BofA unless you’re a boomer
BAML or we’re throwing hands
I've seen P72 guys put "Formerly SAC Capital" on LinkedIn so probably a prestige thing as well
I vaguely recall getting an internal email back in the day to the effect of the Merrill Lynch will no longer continue as a legal corporate entity but retained as a brand marketing. Thus people continued to use the ML moniker but was legally all BofA. Also vaguely recall that the ML brand was stronger in EMEA than BofA brand from a couple European bros from analyst training, but grain of salt because this was a while ago.
