Liberty Hotel is a pretty cool place. They have at least one restaurant I know and a cool bar
O-Ya on East Street for Japanese/Sushi, Lolita in Back Bay for Mexican is awesome, Abe & Louie's on Boylston
Fav places I've been to: Mexican- Casa Romero Best Burger- Back Bay Social Club Meatfest (interesting experience)-Fogo de Chao Via Matta-Good italian food, amazing homemade burrata Finale- Best Desserts(Get the molten chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream)

Just went to B&G Oysters in South End this past weekend and the fish / oysters were awesome Also a fan of Island Creek Oyster Bar

Speakeasy: Drink in South Boston
Comfort Food: Scross the street from Drink = Lucky's and good for Frank Sinatra night and turns into a decent bar/ club for S Boston
If you want to go to the suburbs, Blue Ginger is good. It's not a hole in the wall though.
For a hole in the wall - Grotto near the state house.
Any of Ken Oringer's spots will satisfy your expensive requirement. The South End has a ton of great spots - if you're adventurous, check out Addis Red Sea for some Eitiopian food. If you want to get really ethnic, trek out to Sommerville.
You definitely CAN go wrong with Italian in the North End - avoid the tourist traps on Salem/Hannover streets and find something on a side street.
Check out the North End, can't go wrong with any of the authentic Italian restaurants.
If you're ever looking for a casual pizza joint that has the best pizza you'll ever taste - go to the original regina pizzeria.
Try Fogo de Chao, THL put some money into it.
I live in the north end, and you definitely can't go wrong with almost anything on Hanover (I really like Lucca and Bricco). If you want something on a side street you have to be more carefull, cuz most of them aren't as good. Carmine is probably my favorite one off the beaten path.
