Brittney Griner Sentenced to 9 years in Russian Federal Prison - Thoughts?

I don't know why people are dog piling on her hate train. To my knowledge, she has never said anything overtly anti western or anti american like some of the blue haired morons you see around.

What is fascinating though is that, previously ultra liberal people who admired communist russia and such governments and call each other comrade seem to be flabbergasted that the russian government is jailing a celebrity. To them, russia and china with ultra powerful governments are the blueprint for a successful happy environment for LGBTQ people who smoke weed and are offended all day and they can't now seem to wrap their head around the reality of such a government and are now finding a way to blame america.

Remember that time the "intellectual elites" from Harvard and Yale told us that Soviet Russia under Stalin was a model socioeconomic system to be emulated and praised????

Nothing intellectual or elite about that shit lmao ivy tower liberals have been buying into the stupidest, most sensationalist bullshit to be different since day 1 and it's nearly always wrong. Go figure the same assholes who worshipped Stalin during the Great Purge era would now like to inform us that the definition of gender has changed overnight and has nothing to do with biology or genitalia.

Walter Duranty was one such example. Cambridge educated and a chief editor or something like that at the New York Times. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his writings on the Soviet Union in which he habitually denied famine, inhumanity and political repression in favor of making the SU sound like some idyllic, groundbreakingly successful social experiment that offered a superior alternative to western capitalism. He deferred to Stalin's state-sponsored propaganda as a source of higher truth, siding with Stalin during situations such as the Moscow Show Trials. Western "intellectuals" and university academics (many of them from leading academic institutions) gobbled the bullshit up completely and used the SU as their gleaming example of the merits of a communist society.

It's stuff like that, that drives me crazy when super liberal academics sponsored by equally liberal institutions start spouting their social theories and political opinions and try to pass it off as some type of hard, empirical science. Like I don't wanna here professors who would have been on the Stalin bandwagon back in 1930 lecturing me about BLM and white fragility and shit.

I know this has very little to do with OP's post I just use the Off-Topic section to rant my politics occasionally lol.

Moving to a more serious topic - it’s laughable how Biden is calling on Russia to let her go for being wrongfully detained blah blah blah.. considering he and his VP are directly responsible for jailing thousands if not millions of people for some absolute bullshit laws here in America

You have to be pretty dumb to take drugs with you to most foreign countries. A lot of SEA countries for example have insanely harsh penalties. Being American doesn't get you a free pass.

To me this is a good example of play stupid games and win stupid prizes. I don't believe she should be jailed but I dont get why you would even play the game of sneak weed into a shitty country with strict laws.

Don't traffic drugs into Russia and expect your medical marijuana card from Arizona to bail you out.. I bet she'll stand for the flag once she gets out via exchange from the horrible oppressor known as the United States.

Now where does standing for the flag even come into play? You people are fucked in the head

Regardless of her political views definitely feel bad for her but what was she thinking bringing that to Russia while tensions were heating up with the approach of the Ukraine invasion? Why even go at all to compete there in the first place with what was happening in the region? The logic of this whole thing just baffles me. I don't know much about her prior political views but maybe this will waken people up to how fair of a country the US actually is . . .

Like many people, she doesn't care about shit as long as she gets paid. What was she getting paid for in Russia? Playing Basketball for a team in Russia. WNBA in russia is supposed to be pretty lucrative and she's part of a team there.

I really doubt it was accidental given the circumstance. She straight up tried smuggling illegal drugs

Who are these liberals you speak of who were okay with everything the USSR and Russia have done, up to and including the invasion, but drew the line at a basketball player getting arrested for drugs?  Sounds like a straw man to me.

Take this back to its core, Bringing drugs of any kind Into a country big NO NO. Bringing drugs into Russia that’s just plain stupidity. It’s also a level of arrogance to think you could bring drugs into a country and get away with it.

She’s got 9 years, if she makes it through she’ll be changed for life. IF is the word to take from that. Though there’s a possibility if she’s still alive she might get traded, prisoner exchange that sort of thing.

Who cares? No way trading an arms dealer for some rando WNBA player is a fair swap and the silly woman smuggled drugs into Russia knowing damn well what the consequences are. Nobody outside the US gives a flying fuck what you can get away with in the US, you go somewhere else and flagrantly break their laws that's on you. Not bringing drugs on a plane is like grade school-tier understanding of how to travel appropriately. Bye bye Brittney.

Not to mention, this is the arms dealer that is the living inspiration for  the (based on my research, frankly docudrama) Lord of War!

...as if US laws are somehow applicable to the rest of the world, let alone a quasi-communist country.

Shhh....don't try and tell the IRS that or it'll end pretty badly for you.
