cheap temporary housing close to NYC
I'm moving back to US after 15 years in Asia. I have a miniscule US network and no job offers. So I need to plant myself somewhere and start networking. I figure NYC is the best places to get started. I did complete my undergrad and MBA in the US, albeit in California, so I will look to those networks at first. But in order to network I will need to be on the ground. So where can I stay without breaking the bank near NYC on a temporary basis, for perhaps 1-3 months?
There's really no need to physically be in NYC to network, especially post-covid when people are in the office a lot less. You can easily network over the phone, and maybe do a 1 week NYC trip where you hit a bunch of in-person coffees with those people if you feel you need to. But paying $3k+ in rent (which is about the going rate for short-term/furnished for anywhere within an hour or two of NYC) seems like a waste of funds.
From other posts seems like you have an APAC PE background, so it shouldn't be very difficult to get a role here as long as you're not set on MF PE. Start sending emails to your undergrad and MBA alumni network to get them on the phone, and keep an eye out for any interesting jobs you can just apply directly to.
I suck at networking. I don't really know how to go about it. Any pointers?
What type of roles are you looking for? Beyond that first or second job, most US roles are not landed through cold networking, so I question if it's even worth the effort. You're pretty senior, it's gonna take a lot of cold emails to find someone who even has a senior role available. It's already hard enough for those college sophomores who know every bank has a hundred spots for them.
Two ideas of places to start:
- Direct applying. LinkedIn and job portals have become the place to get jobs in the US. Start there and apply to any of interest. You'd be surprised at how many VP/Director level postings are just open online. If you really like a job, search people on the team on LinkedIn and say you saw the posting, do they have 15 min to hop on the phone to get a bit more info on the role?
- Use your APAC network - any friends who are ex-pats, went to MBA in the states, work for a large company with a US presence etc? Shoot them a text and ask if they know of anyone you should get on the phone with in the states. These warm intros are much more successful than straight up cold emailing.
June apartments are pricy in the short term but they'll rent you a lost cost apartment shared with others for a short time. Jersey city is also fairly affordable.
