Congress suggests suspension of H1b, OPT, H2b, EB5

All,

As frequently seen on WSO there are various users who are international students on F1 visas. Many have raised the question what will happen to them in light of the current economic climate.

The congress have submitted a proposal regarding "guest visas" (= non-immigrant visa) and, if ratified, the outcome might be: - 60 day suspension of new H1b - suspension of other guest workers for at least 1 year or until domestic unemployment levels decrease - suspension of EB5 program - suspension shall include H2b - OPT shall also be suspended Other visa types are not specifically mentioned or I skimmed the documents too fast. Medical staff like nurses and doctors shall be excluded, according to the letter.

If you are an international student who requires OPT or H1b, now would be a good time to look for alternative employment markets. If ratified, the outcome for many current and prospective international monkeys will be tragic.

It depends on what you are after. IF the proposal gets signed (and there is no date or clear announcement so far, from anyone), then it might be a very long "temporary" suspension. "Until domestic employment numbers improve" is super vague and means they can have an easier time denying visas. Overall visa denials are very high currently.

If this gets signed I would say internationals are pretty much out of luck for any kind of employment based sponsorship, unless they work in healthcare or science.
