Contact not responding?
I’ve been trying to get in touch with a contact of mine (alum of my school and previous company) who hasn’t been responding after a few texts and calls.
We know each other in person and have spoken numerous times since we first met one another (it’s not like I’m cold emailing someone over and over again expecting them to get back to me), and I’m not sure what to do atp.
I was hoping for a letter of recommendation and hers would be crucial—-I’m sure she’s busy but I don’t want to risk pissing her off if I keep reaching out. Thoughts?
Find a backup. Unfortunately a lot of 'reconnecting' with your network feels a lot tougher nowadays (which might be due to contacts reaching out for something transactionally - a Letter of Recommendation, referral for a job posting at their company). After a second or third follow up attempt, its best to move on.
A good way to counter this is updating your contact with industry news / check-in on them as a friend rather than a professional contact. I admittedly suck at keeping my professional network engaged, especially those who I admire professionally and have helped me tremendously.
Thanks. I’m just surprised because even before I had asked to chat regarding a letter, i also had asked to catch up in general. In the mean time, I’ll be taking your advice.
When you say keeping them updated on industry news, can you specify what you mean?
Lets say you find an interesting article about the industry your contact works in. You send it over to them.
Examples: a competitor getting acquired / they did a cool acquisition etc. See how they feel about it, idk. It's very situational dependent.
