DC or Atlanta

Considering a move to either DC or Atlanta. Lived in DC before. If I live there, it would most likely be in NoVa near Dulles. If in Atlanta, probably around Buckhead. I am married and planning to start a family in a couple years. I am looking for quality of life, cost of living, kids activities, public school system (very important), restaurants, regular activities, safety, weather etc.

I have opportunities in either market, what are you thoughts? Lived on the MD side of DC for awhile and have been to Atlanta countless times, but any insight on pros/cons would be appreciated.

I went to a semi semi target undergrad a little over a decade ago that has a large pipeline of students from both areas. I lived in Atlanta a few years ago if you want to live inside the loop or as they say in the ATL, the perimeter, the lakeside area in the northeast is a great spot. if it’s not that important, look into parts of east cobb county that feed into Walton high school, one of the top rated publics in the country. I know it’s not buckhead, but not too far away. the elementary school in the Peachtree hills neighborhood on the south end of buckhead has a great elementary, but not too sure about middle and high school.

if you are leaning DC, you probably know the area around Dulles is full of phenomenal public schools.

Best of luck in making your decision.

Fairfax and Loudoun Counties have some of the best public schools in the country, which is why Nova is so popular. The further out you go (towards and then past Dulles) the more affordable the housing will be but it will still be much more expensive than Atlanta. Where will the office be in DC? Traffic is a nightmare in the area and you’re about an hour away from DC at Dulles.

^^^ this!! if you’re working out by Dulles, not a problem, but if you’re commuting into dc or even Tyson’s/Arlington, your commute will essentially be standstill traffic for over an hour each way. my parents live 12 mins from my dad’s office across from the Capitol but many mornings in rush hour it takes him 40-50. can’t imagine what that’d look like driving 30 miles each way from Dulles
