Death of TPP; Beijing to take lead with new trade deals in Asia Pacific

It appears that the TPP is not going to happen with Trump nominated as the POTUS, and the TPP drafted by Obama is going to go down the drain. With that, Beijing is looking to take control of the position as leader of free trade in Asia Pacific.
"China believes we should set a new and very practical working plan, to positively respond to the expectations of industry, and sustain momentum and establish a free trade area in Asia-Pacific at an early date," Li said
What are your thoughts on this matter? Is USA going to enter a state of protectionism under Trump's lead? Considering how he wants to renegotiate terms with NAFTA or even withdraw from it? I understand that Trump wants to kill the leak of good quality jobs to other countries but is this way really the best way to go about healing the American Economy?
What do you guys think? I'd appreciate some input on this matter!
