Did Jerry Jones Just Cost Tebow a Couple Mil?

If you were Tim Tebow's agent, how pissed would you be at Jerry Jones this morning? In this soon-to-be viral video, a seemingly inebriated Jerry Jones disses Bill Parcells ("Not worth a shit. I had to bring him in to get this fucking stadium built."), and then goes on to say that he wouldn't even take Tebow in the 3rd round because, "I couldn't get him on the field." Ouch.

Jones basically got caught saying what everyone else is thinking, but I wonder what net financial impact this will have on Tebow a week before the draft. Is a slurring Jerry Jones enough to give the first half dozen or so teams pause, and cost Tebow millions of dollars in signing bonus?

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm a Gator Hater, so I'm disinclined to give Tebow the benefit of the doubt to begin with. That said, even if I were a fan, I don't think his playing style works well in the NFL. To his credit, off the field he seems like a class act, and nothing like the head cases other run-and-gun quarterbacks are (Vince Young, Michael Vick, Ben Roethlisberger - no means no, big guy).

I realize this isn't a Wall Street conversation, per se. But we all have a vested interest in maximizing our personal capital, so I think it's an interesting conversation to have. Could a case be made by Tebow that Jones damaged his "brand"? And, if so, is that actionable?

Either way, I don't think we'll see Tebow wearing a Dallas uniform any time soon.

And for those who just can't get enough of burnt out, head case quarterbacks, here's an interview from yesterday with Ryan Leaf, who was just sentenced to 10 years probation on felony drug charges. Enjoy:

I don't know Tebow personally, however, a buddy of mine does/did and from what he has told me, Tebow is a d-bag off the field. Like I said, I have not seen anything personally, however, I do see this whole Tiger Woods thing developing with him...assuming he makes it in the NFL.

Unfortunately, the guys who mind their own business and fly under the radar tend to do better when it comes to the media and professional careers as nobody has a vested interest in "outing" someone who no one cares about. However, when you make bold statements about your faith and belief system there is money/fame to be made if someone can prove otherwise. Additionally, guys like Tebow are naturally potential targets because you can't make a hypocrite out of a heathen.

Anyways, congrats to him for putting in some awesome years at UF (note: I'm an FSU fan, so it hurts to say that) and best of luck to him in the future.

Regards

Disclaimer: I actually like Tebow

Its not gonna do anything to his draft stock, if a team already wanted to draft him they know how almost every GM feels, and that there is a huge risk with him, and he wasnt gonna get millions in the first place.

Just came from a football debate on another thread, http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/pinpointing-americas-demise, and I promised there I wouldn't make another post on football. But what the hey, this is a football thread so as an ex-coach why not?

My two cents on Tebow the football player is he has no chance at being a pro QB, for two reasons.

  1. His physical mechanics: Played facing the line of scrimmage his whole career. Never had to take ball from center and turn away from the line drop back, turn and find receivers. This is very hard to do. He already has a too long a delivery time before he lets go of the ball now when facing the receivers the whole time. Also his ball is not pro level velocity or accuracy.

  2. He did not play in a pro offense with an emphasis on reading the defense and going through his receiver progressions so the intense pro QB mental pre- training is not there either.

In adition he is not fast enough to be a scrambling QB in the pros and wont be able to run over D linemen and LBs

That leaves him as a potential TE,or FB maybe and special teamer

But hey, by many measures he is an outstanding success as an athlete. In college of course on and off the field, and he will sign a pro contract with some guaranteed millions so even if he has a short, brutish pro career on the field he will have done what any successful pro athlete should do, make a lot of money and set himself up for the next career stage in media, entertainment, ministry. etc. So I guess this kind of long term planning, and career and financial success ties in to the WSO ethos

To answer the OP's question: NO. It would be ridiculous for a team to change their opinion of Tebow based on Jerry Jones' drunken berating of him. Before this incident, he was a low 2nd/high 3rd round pick. After this incident, he is a low 2nd/high 3rd round pick.

His draft stock being hurt by this would indicate teams trust Jerry Jonesmore than their own scouting. I don't think that's the case. As for tebow, he will be an excellent option as a wildcat quarterback. His perfect fit is Miami, but they alreqdy have pat white,so I wonder where he will go.

i hate tebow and think he will never be a successful NFL QB, but anyone who thinks he will get drafted lower than the 2nd round is just fooling themselves. like him or not, he has one of the most impressive college football resumes in history, probably only behind barry sanders. and by all accounts, he's a great leader with a strong work ethic. no doubt an NFL team will take him in the first 2 rounds, it's just a question of who will take the bite. Several NFL analysts, including Mike Mayock, think Tebow might go in the late 1st round because of the new draft format.

Personally, I think someone will snap him up in the late first. I agree with all the criticism and I don't believe he'll be a very good NFL QB...BUT...think about the upside. He has obstacles, but if he does manage to overcome them and have anything close to the type of career he did in college, it's worth it.

Tebow would not play over Romo, a young pro bowl QB who Jones has invested a big time, lots of guarantees, long-term contract in. Because of this, Jones "couldn't get him on the field" as he said.

Like Tebow or not, Jones' comments were in no way damning of Tebow's ability, they were merely Jones stating the obvious which is HE wouldnt draft Tebow because he's already solidified at the quarterback position.
