Do I need to get a NY state ID if I won't be driving in the city?

Just moved to the city and currently have an out-of-state ID. Is there any reason to get a NY state license if I don't intend to drive? Figure if there are no benefits, then I won't waste the money or time. Additionally, any opinions on the IDNYC Card? Seems like it gives discounts at places and is free.

If you don't plan to drive in NYC, there’s no strict requirement to get a NY state driver’s license. However, there are a few considerations:

  1. IDNYC Card: Based on the most helpful WSO content, the IDNYC card is a great option for non-drivers. It’s free and offers discounts at various cultural institutions, entertainment venues, and even some gyms. It can also serve as a valid form of identification within the city.

  2. Practical Benefits: Having a NY state ID (non-driver ID) might make certain processes easier, such as opening local bank accounts, verifying your identity for housing applications, or accessing city services. It’s not mandatory, but it could be convenient.

  3. Out-of-State ID: If your out-of-state ID is still valid and you don’t foresee needing a local ID for specific purposes, you might not need to switch. However, keep in mind that some establishments might prefer a local ID for age verification or other purposes.

If you’re looking for discounts and perks, the IDNYC card seems like a solid choice without the hassle or cost of switching to a NY state ID.
